This is fine and all, but there is a slightly minor issue there. Smartphones can be stolen, Theese phones will have 'military grade' apps on them not to mention the phones can already access their network.
Get one of them and you know where your opponent is going to come knocking next.
Get your hands on maybe a dozen and you can start to screw with them.
Get your hands on at least 30 and you can have the same intelligence network theyre using against you.

They could always put a self destruct in them, if a soldier goes MIA or gets captured HQ could just fry his phone.

Problem is that phone would also be a great way for an army to find there missing soldier, so it would be a double edged sword.

Wouldn't be much use in a country that has the power to nullify it's cell phone towers in an instant. Mobile units only have a limited radius, and you can't deploy them everywhere.

They don't use the cell-network. So shutting of the towers wouldn't do much good...

LOL so basically the enemies get high-lighted on a HUD like in Ghost Recon?

I was thinking along those lines as well when I read the whole "hooked up" and "GPS" parts.

If you give people communication options they will abuse it, especially when they are bored (and when you are deployed and nothing happens you get very bored).
