I have played quite a few during my time as a gamer, and I've been looking for another one to add to the list. So, what is the best tactics game you have ever played?

Anything that could be called "Tactics" applies whether Isometric or not (Like FF Tactics Advanced or Fire Emblem).

Personally my favorite was Tactics Ogre: The Knight Of Lodis for the GBA. It's a rare find now, but the story is excellent and the battle system is easy to use and fairly refined with a well balanced roster of character classes.

Disgaea. Amazing SRPG, perfect humor and insane leveling. The game wants you to break it. You can literally get your (power)level over nine thousand!!!

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days are on the PSP and they really do make for perfect portable games. If you try to do everything you possibly can in the games, you can preoccupy yourself for a good year or 2...

So many to choose from. I loves me some Shining Force 2. The Disgaea series is also incredible. FFT is my second favourite Final Fantasy and sits snugly in my top 10. I've only played one Fire Emblem but it was awesome. The Advance Wars series has never let me down...

As you can see I love tactical turn-based RPGs.

GBA tactics games have been superior.

Fire Emblem at later stages is awesome.

Then of course, Advanced Wars was sweet.

Only ones I've played. USually I'll play Pokemon or Final Fantasy Advance installments if I'm going to RPG.

+9000 respect points for knowing that game...god I love that game. Story wise, it's what FF Tactics advance should have been.

Anywho some of my favorites would have to be the Ogre battle series, and it's more popular cousin which it inspired, FFT (original).

Jeanne D'arc is another great tactics RPG if you got a PSP. Not too innovative but a very refined and polished. The blind siding/flanking system and the allied defense system where really fun little mechanics that would make you think of how you moved your units. Also has a great story to go with it.

Disgaea series is also made of win for its crazy gameplay and lolz worthy story and characters.

Another awesome GBA tactics game which ranks as one of my top 3 favorite GBA games is Zone of the Enders: the fist of Mars. It was a fucking graphic novel, but a damn good one. It also had really nice chunks of gameplay between the story. For every 10-20 minutes of story, you got an equally big peice of gameplay to go with it.

Plus 1 internet for anyone who has played Bahamut Lagoon (by square by the way), that was a real awesome TRPG. Not that many people would have played it since it was only released on the SNES in Japan so the ONLY way to playing it is through ROM. Really lengthy game and kick ass combat, play it NOW!! it's great.

Oh and while we are on the subject of TRPGs, does anyone know is Yggdra union (PSP version) is any good? I've seen it around but I could never bring myself to get it for some reason, I just need some closure from someone who knows their shit when it comes to TRPGs.

Both my choices have been mentioned. Disgaea, all 3. These are not only fun tactical RPGs, but they are hilarious.

And Jeanne D'arc. It actually has a decent story. Kept me interested even if the tactics weren't as diverse as Disgaea.

Everyone keeps mentioning the only strategy game I ever played and yes that would be Disgaea

oh and i also played Cross Edge i find that quite different in the ways of strategy (i have a feeling some people might say its more turn-based than strategy but I like to think of it as a little bit of both).

I remember playing that years ago when someone finally translated it. It was pretty fun for a while, but I never finished it, because it got kind of boring once I realized how ridiculously easy it was to completely break the game by pimping out your dragons and letting them basically win the game for you by default. After several levels of exactly zero challenge, I kind of gave up. Liked some of the ideas in it, though, including the dragons, just not the lack of balance.

Call me crazy if you must, but Final Fantasy Tactics A2 was one of the most genuinely enjoyable games I've played on a console or handheld in years. I considered giving it my 2008 Game of the Year (before deciding on Mount&Blade).

I do own a PSP and both the Disgaea games and Jeanne D'arc are on my to-buy list, so I should have those soon. I tried to buy them at local game stores, but for some reason the used PSP games have about a 2% chance of having both the original box and manual (I'm really uptight about that if I have to buy used). Combine that with the limited stock of PSP games at my local Gamestop and there wasn't a decent copy for sale in the entire city (that I could find). I will try to order them from amazon next chance I get.
