The creator insisted on the name Miles Prower but Sega felt it would not appeal to kids so they wanted the name tails. They compromised by making it a nickname.

Miler Prower is a pun/sound-a-like/whatever the approprail term is for " Miler per hour", which soudns like "Miles Prower" if said fast, a refrence to the fast pace of the sonic games. "Tails" was made in refrence to his 2 tails (duh) and as a cute nickname to appeal to kids

I didn't know there was a story behind the name Miles Prower, but now that I say the name out loud it makes sense, LOL
