Take Every Book in Skyrim with You

Every book in Skyrim is now available in convenient e-reader format.

I love the amount of lore in the Elder Scrolls universe. Like Tolkien, the masters behind Cyrodil have written reams of digital books regarding the reign of this king or that rebellion. In the first ten hours playing Skyrim, I probably spent half the time browsing the books on random townspeople's shelves. I had to stop myself because my game-playing time is so limited I didn't want to waste it reading extraneous - but still awesome - background information. But now, thanks to the Johan Gutenberg of Skyrim - a software developer who guys by the handle Capaneus - all of the written material in the game is now available in a format readable by your Kindle or other reader.

Like me, Capaneus loved the books, but didn't want to waste game-playing time reading them. "I took a look at how Skyrim actually stores these nuggets of incidental storytelling," he said. "By the 9, it was in plain text! I pasted the book text into separate docs, slapped on headings, created a table of contents and a cover, and just like that, I can read my copy of The Lusty Argonian Maid on-the-go!"

Head over to Capaneus' website [http://capane.us/2011/11/24/dovahkiin-gutenberg/] to download a copy if you're interested. As Capaneus points out, technically, with copyright issues and all that, you should only download the file if you already own the game.

But if you get psyched about reading all the books in Skyrim without actually playing the game, you probably have bigger problems than being a software pirate.

What?? Even if you still own the game it still against copyright to download it. Bethesda didn't give rights for this guy to rip every book from the game. Bethesda didn't give rights to have the text anywhere but inside the game.

A good chunk of those books were originally in Daggerfall and Arena which Bethesda released as freeware sometime ago. So he might be in the clear as far as those titles were concerned. Still I don't think Bethesda really cares about people posting the books on the internet. I don't recall them issuing any take down notices on sites posting the books. As long as he isn't charging money for them then Bethesda probably won't care.

Yay! I can read all these books without feeling like I'm cutting into valuable Skyrim time!

Question: If I read, say, 'The Armourer's Challenge' in real life, does my ability to work metal increase?

True, I don't think it will ever be an issue, unless Bethesda wanted to sell a Kindle version, which was seriously unlikely. Still but to claim in not a copyright issue because you own the game is not correct in terms of the law.

Great! Now Raj can have all his favorite books in one place!

Will be much easier to hide in attic crawl space with favorite book now when Wife Mjoll is trying to gut me like river salmon.
Raj didnt leave dirty underwear on kitchen table again. Honest. She is mad about something else this time.

Not sure what. Asking normally makes it worse.

Plenty of time, my sweet. Plenty of time...

So awesome to meet the author in Morrowind :D
Wait, the author exists during Morrowind, that gives how many centuries of difference? Seems people really like porn to make the books last that long.

You certain about that?

If he was selling it, obviously it's an issue. The fact that he's also providing it to people who don't own the game, yeah, maybe, if anyone cared.

But for people who already own the game, what exactly is the violation? The material, both the raw data and whatever definitions you want to put on the content, are already in the user's possession and this is nothing but reorganizing it.

One related thing to quote:

17 U.S.C. § 107

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

The nature of the copyrighted work;

The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;

And the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
As I'm interpreting it, if the material is unpublished, not being used for profit and will not have a negative impact upon Skyrim's market, it will safely fall under "fair-use" and should be good to go.

The only argument I could see being made is if someone wants to claim that they would only have bought the game "for the books", and now won't because they've been made available for free.

When relating to people who actually already own the game, not much legal ground to stand on.

So you should only violate their copyright if you already own the game? That's....Weird.

No, but if you make iron daggers in real life, it does.

I love you.

OT: This is lovely, I can now read the books on the go without in it constantly taking up so much space in my inventory :3

Yeah, after seeing one bookshelf, I didn't even consider collecting them, as I knew that I would never be able to do so without ending up as another plaything of Sheogorath. Now I have a better option!

Incidentally, you should at least take the time to crack all the books open once, as some of them confer skill levels.

it's pretty easy to tell skill books from normal ones, as skill books have a vastly bigger value
