Hmmm, the concept is intriguing, but relies on people, 8 people, to be commited, and it would be a rare game ideed where you have such people.

No, it takes 8 people to start a game. I'm in three games at the moment (that's max). People who don't play for a while get replaced by an AI who runs their empire from that point on.

'scuse me, but there is already an awesome web-based space strategy game on the intertubes, that is played by many thousand people, it's called OGame.

Space games absolutely MUST have a galaxy map. It's just required.
