I am debating whether to get Mafia 2 or not, contributing to the sales, for console or PC (I'm partial to console, it feels more like a "console-y" game to me), since the overall scores do seem to be varying from "meh" to "pretty good". Any recommendations?
It's a linear game set in a sandbox purely for atmospheric purposes. You always have something to do, but that doesn't mean you have to do it right away. If you want to go get a hot dog, or rob a clothing shop, or ramp off a sweet jump you can, but you always have something to do.

I loved the hell out of it. Best story I've found in a game since Bioshock. (I got it for PC, by the way)
So console or PC? From what I've played, it feels more console-y in that precision aiming isn't neccessary, and I've never found driving great on PCs.
Well, precision isn't a HUGE part of it (no sniper rifles and whatnot) but still, you're going to want to place your shots well if you're going up against three or more guys with automatic weapons on any difficulty higher than easy. The game is unforgiving to those who think a taking cover is for the weak.

I bought it on PC because I'm primarily a PC gamer, so I point at things I want to make dead and they go boom. The driving is more dependant on the car than it is the control interface; when you hold the turn button you'll turn rather sharply, but how sharp varies based on what car you're in. There aren't any sections where smooth driving is essential, and I haven't found PC controls obnoxiously unwieldy at high or low speed.

If you've got a half decent rig, I'd defiantly suggest PC.

From what I have seen of the game - and what it has to offer - I would actually agree. I think its a great game, with, alot of potential involved

The negative reviews seem to be by the same sort of people who said Metro 2033 was horrible because it was linear. I haven't gotten the game myself yet, but I intend to do so very soon.

If what I gather is correct, the game is for you if you are okay with it being fully focused on the story and not so much on the free roaming.
Oh yes, totally, I'm honestly getting worn out by all the sandbox shooters around here and want a good solid story to get into.
I still can't get over how good Metro 2033 was as a story driven FPS. The FPS elements were top notch and it provided for a very solid gameplay experience.

Clearly everyone's going to buy it eventually, just for the chance that it might get them laid [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8045-Review-Mafia-II].

Okay, seriously though, if its narrative, characters and emotive powers are as good as Mr Pitts says they are, then I believe it is quite possible that the game will be a slow burner and return a profit in time.

Metro 2033 was a bit confusing and bugged out at points (to name a thing - the frickin' gas masks), but there's some solid gunplay and pretty good exposition to be had.

Then there's shit like this.

Fuck 2k, I want the content that I payed for. I don't know if you guys know, but here's what is known to be taken out of the finale game: 8 Sicilian missions before Chapter 2 cut out, melee weapons cut out, gun permits cut out, at least 5 missions after Chapter 2 cut out and pre-rendered cutscenes put in instead, 4 alternative endings cut out, side missions like assassination missions, freeride mode and god knows what else. Even the freakin' writer of Mafia 2 is supporting the petition to give players the original content. I feel so sorry for 2k Czech. They are another victim of greedy publishers. I beg you not to buy any future Mafia 2 DLC. You will only encourage this theft.
Mafia 2 was planned as an epic. A big game. Y'know, a lot like GTA4 or Red Dead Redemption. There was so much content promised (and the content that was found hidden post-release) that got cut out. Had Mafia 2 been delivered as it was, it would've been a worthy sequel to the first game. It was not. The only thing driving the game is the story, which isn't paced really well, had pages ripped out of the script and therefore has some blind spots and holes.
It's not a complete game.

I dunno what it is with him and raising the game to such status. Reading the article discussing the story, he got really involved in it. I never did get involved to such extent. Maybe he's just not taking a step back and seeing the whole picture, maybe it's just my opinion. Seeing how he talked about the achievement for reaching X amount of MPH I'll take it he's the kind of person who likes to dive into something and like it no matter what. I'll give the game credit for it's emotive powers and well-designed characters, but it's not perfect. Which it could've been. Stupid publishers and stupid goddamn Pachter. The game won't be raised to the status of a classic with time. It will be credited for what it's done right, but it will always be constrained by it's faults and no amounts of DLC in HELL will manage to do so.

Why do people keep listening to Pachter? And why does he keep getting news pages on the Escapist? He's either wrong or just says what everybody already knows.
Excactly what I thought! Esp.s the "WHY on Escapist" part.

Well Take-Two are going the rip-off DLC route to squeeze more money out of it. Seriously, the game has just been released and I see DLC up on Steam now. People are going to get sick of devs taking things that should be in the game anyway and charging extra for it before long.
