Do you enjoy testing and challenging yourself? How and why? How does it benefit you?

I don't run on a regular basis, but sometimes I just have to go for a long run. I have often just picked a direction and started running. I've done about 20 km (13 miles) many times. I also cycle and swim long distances when I have the chance. When I was serving a year in the Finnish Defense Force, we used to walk or ski more than 30 km with about 30 kg (60 pounds) of gear.

I also like to climb rocks, trees and buildings. There is nothing like mortal danger to clear your head.

Karate. More specifically, the sparring portion of it. I just moved up from the juiner class (12-16) into the adult class (16 and up) about two years ago. Going from being one of the biggist kids with one of the highist belts to being fairly small with a mid-level belt can really prove to be a challenge. Especially when you start sparring with guys 100-150 pounds heavier then you.

qbert4ever, I know what you mean. I spar Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with some of my friends. Those chokes and joint locks can be unpleasant. Once I let a friend choke me out, just to see how it would feel. If the carotid arteries are blocked you go out in a few seconds and wake up almost immediately when the choke is released.

I'm small and often had to fight bigger guys. I usually go for the takedowns and grappling. That way there is a better chance of me winning and not actually injuring either one.

As where I do enjoy just running or working out for the sake of pushing myself, I don't like doing something for nothing. I like to do Manual labor, where something comes out of me pushing myself to the limit. Aye personal limits are fine and all but they don't always give me the spark to keep with it all the time. Getting up at dawn and working all day in the barn, out rebuilding a house or even chopping wood is more fun than just working out. Boxing is fun also though I've only done it a few times before. Sparring or learning how to use a weapon is fun as well.

My pride and joy is my deductive reasoning; as such this is where I push myself to my upmost limits. In order to train this I sit down and present myself with a question or a hypothetical situation, and have a silent debate in my head. This has driven me to the limits of insanaty on more than one occasion; I belive however, that I have benifited from it.

Then again, I could just be the wierdest person you've ever met. It wouldn't be a stretch; I do suffer from Aspergers Syndrome.

I apologize if this was supposed to be purely about physichal chatlenges. If it makes you feel any better, I like fencing...

I have similar debates in my head all the time. Often I even hear the different voices of the participants. These debates usually begin with little or no effort on my part and I am often suprise when I realize what is going on. I guess I need to test the validity of my conclusions with multiple opposing arguments.

This is a good way of exposing your own prejudices and logical blind spots.

I generally try to push myself whenever I'm doing anything related to academics or schooling. Oh yeah, thanks for rationalizing internal debates like that, some times things get a bit schizophrenic with me, but anything involving Objectivism gets intense.

Cycling here. And yeah, mental debates here. Unfortunately I have a habit of projecting opposing opinions into imaginary people who are standing with me, resulting in me have a fierce argument with someone who isn't there. I have done that in public on two occasions, but luckily the streets were empty. I just hope the cars weren't paying too much attention.

Don't know about testing myself, but I do test other peoples patience. Mainly due to rampant cynicism and habit of jumping in with both feet whenever a debatable subject rears its head.

Most recent case in point:-

Friend of mine was talking about Afghanistan with her B/F who happens to be serving there right now, we got talking about Iraq and I said "You know, if they had nuked Iraq in 1992 there would probably been less civilian casualties, if you include this war"

It didn't go down very well. Still it did allow me to test myself on extraction from a difficult situation. :)
