As the title says, this thread is about breaks in between going to school/college and other places of studying. I recently came across a thread on another message board(mmo-champion.com), where there was a guy asking the other members whether or not it would be a good idea for him to take a year off between high school and college, in order to make some money, move out of his parents house ect. I was surprised to see the overwhelming responses where that he shouldn't take a year off and go directly to college. The primary reasoning from the people with that opinion was, that if he got a job, he'd get to comfortable with having financial security and that picking up books and beginning to study again would be too hard. A similar view to this was that one year would become two, then three etc. until it was "too late"(is it ever that to go college?).

I don't know if it really is that way in the US(where the story takes place) or if it's just an exaggeration. It might also be that way in other countries besides US, I don't know, but I do know that it's nowhere near that bad here in Denmark. Sure our government have incentives for people not delaying too long to further educate themselves, but they meeting the requirements for those incentives is pretty easy.

Now, the school system here is different, but for me, I was an exchange student for a year in Florida between primary school(would probably be somewhere in the middle of high school, educational-wise) and gymnasium(which is probably similar to the later years of high school). I also had a one-year break after I graduated from gymnasium, which I spent working, moving out and all that. I can't really recognize any of the problems stated in the above story, I mean sure, I had no problem getting back from Florida and starting in gymnasium. It just meant I met some new people and made some new friends. I also had a no problem starting university after my working year, granted I'm not the best student, but I never was. For me, having taken those two years out of my regular education have been great, had some great experience and I have quite a bit more financial security, than I would have, had I started university right after I graduated, which is really nice.

Anyway, my whole point in this thread is what is your view on taking a year off, working, as an exchange student or otherwise? And have you done it/would you consider doing it, at some point?

EDIT: If this has been done before, I apologize, checked the search but I couldn't really find anything.

The gap year really isn't that uncommon. A lot of universities defer enrollment, so if you get accepted to a school then spend a year doing whatever, you can still get in the next without reapplying. I wouldn't take a gap year now that I'm in college, unless I had a really cool place to work, like Singapore.

I took a year off between high school and college, and it just motivated me to want to go to college more, after experiencing the shitty jobs I got without any extra education.

Thankfully welding doesn't require too much at home studying or homework. Except for Blueprint Reading, that one class had a lot studying and homework, but It wasn't too bad.

So, shitty as those jobs were, I was able to save money before college, so taking a year off worked out well for me.
