Hi, I'm not necessarily the most organized individual, and I constantly feel I'm struggling with my note writing if I want to get the most out of reading a book with the intention to learn.

So I was wondering how you guys take notes, or if someone here has a system which they think helps them succeed.

Here are some examples of my current system:

I usually find that if I write on a normal paper on the side, I just write the whole page, because, well you know everything seems important!

I'm also horrible at using highlighter pens, because again, I end up highlighting everything!

captcha: Which one is math? pick one: (...)

oh captcha you relevant bastard.

Just curious, but what subject is that? Linear alg or something? On topic, when I study I take multiple sheets of paper and cut them in 1/2 width wise to have double the ammount. I then try to focus one side of the 1/2ed paper on one area of study, and if its too big, then i extend it to the back.

So maybe for your example I would paraphrase the or in or purpose of the formula, write it, label its variables , and then do a simple or intermediate prblem, writing annotations to guide me. I always to be consise with my notes.

However I am not a A student, so take my words with a heavy grain of salt.

My system changes a little between textbook notes and lecture notes:
For a textbook, I write down a keyword (usually bolded) and provide the definition. That's usually enough for me to reference later. If it isn't enough for me to reference later, I will include an example from the book if it's about an equation/mathematical concept/scientific symbol.
For a lecture, I write down as fast as I can to keep up with examples on the board, keywords on the board, and specific things my professor says but does not write down. The handwriting does not have to be neat enough to study off of, just neat enough for me to rewrite on another sheet(s) of paper a few hours later. This results in roughly half my pages of notebook looking like unintelligible scribbles and the other half being my normal awful handwriting.

Indeed, Linear algebra, the book is about mathematical modeling, I have to use it in my master project in biology. It's actually kind of interesting, but I'm not a mathematical prodigee, and it's been a while since I had about it, so I'm mostly a bit lost.
