What would happen in the game world if you wiped an entire city off the map? Or better yet, wiped out every single NPC in the entire game? Has anyone done this? Do they stay dead, or respawn? My in game moral compass prevents me from attempting this (damn my ethics).... I'm just curious if this has been attempted or even if its possible.

I haven't played Oblivion but I could imagine they would respawn after a short time.

Most random villiagers will stay dead but there are some "essential" characters that are revived after a few seconds. Oh yeah, and guards respwan too. You could try, but there are more essential characters in some places than you might think.

Pretty sure they stay dead (the random villagers)... except for that goddamn adoring fan.

Main quest people will get knocked out but won't die.

I just used the adoring fan as a test subject for my spells, I kept him in the mages town when I got Travens room, he was very useful then.
At first read, I thought that was a little twisted, then I remembered his voice. I don't need to test any, but setting him on fire will surely make me happy. I might keep him in a shifty basement.

It effects almost nothing, literally the ONLY negetive effects of this course of action (Provided that you survive of course) are 1) you get a very very heavy fine, and 2) you can't use any of the town's services because the merchents are likely dead. THAT'S IT, I literally killed ever single god damned living thing in Bravil once and it barely changed a thing other then the fact that Bravil was scattered with corpses.

they stay dead, even if you don't kill them yourself. the alchemist shop vendor in the imperial city died randomly in my game, and people who were programmed to visit her shop just stacked outside her door constantly

never really messed around in oblivion nearly as much as I did in Morrowind. I remember that I killed Vivec. It was a very lame fight where I just kited him around with pets, and filled him with arrows. Because otherwise he'd mess me up. The legit kill took forever and proved to not even be worth the risk since the only loot was lame placeholder, stat-less version of the wraithguard gauntlet thing. Meh.
