I don't think I've ever heard anyone other than myself mention Iron Brigade on his site. It was released I believe in June of last year in the US as Trenched. It wasn't released in most of Europe until December though due to a legal dispute which caused the name change.(which is why I'm surprised it didn't get more attention) It's a third person mech shooter combined with tower defense. I find it to be really fun, especially with a few friends.

The only one I can think of is Mega Man. Now I know what you're thinking and no I'm not joking, but I'm not talking about the Mega Man on the NES that everyone knows about with the Planet of the Apes box art either. No, I'm talking about Mega Man for DOS. It's a glitchy, broken piece of shit that no one should ever play under any circumstances.
Watch this if you don't believe me:

EDIT: Oops I missed the part about having to actually like it. In that case, I got nothing.

Though I have heard it mentioned once on the Escapist before, Falcon 4: Allied Forces. It's even very rarely mentioned on Flight Simulator forums. The company that made it, Lead Pursuit (I assume) has even gone bankrupt.

There was this weird little PC game called Sanatarium, and it was this little point and click adventure game that had the darkest humor I've ever encountered at the time.

It was so fucking weird.

Huh, that was going to be mine.
I guess it's not THAT obscure then, but hey, it's still a damn good game.
Extremely weird, but good.

I bought it on a whim years and years ago and I had no idea what I got myself into.

It's a really good game and it actually surpassed my expectations since it was in the bargain bin, but it was really weird.

It's like Myst took acid and had sex with Penumbra and this was the product of that.

Quest For Glory. Mind you, it wasn't an obscure series at the time, as I understand it, it was fairly well known, Sierra's Quest series being popular and selling well, but the last installment was fourteen years ago and the installment before that was 21 years ago.

Ah I loved Act Raiser too, it was such an amazing game, though I could never beat it, that part where you had to beat all of the bosses always kicked my ass, I don't think I still have it.

On that note another game made by Quintet [small](The same guys that made Act Raiser, Enix was just the publisher)[/small] is Terranigma, seriously that game is amazing, I think it may be my favourite game on the SNES, and the SNES has one of the best libraries of any console, it's an Action RPG with some Zelda elements but it's just fucking amazing, I do like everything that Quintet did for the SNES [footnote]I don't actually know of any game made by Quintet that wasn't for the SNES, if you know of any please tell me, I like their games.[/footnote] ActRaiser, Illusion of Gaia/Time, Soul Blazer, but seriously Terranigma is easily their best game, sadly I think that was also their last game since that game said Illusion of Gaia 2 was going to be the next Quintet game but I'm pretty sure that never came out, oh well seriously awesome game, I'd recommend watching the 16-bit Gems video of it [http://www.clanofthegraywolf.com/16-bit-gems/15] that Roo from Clan of The Gray Wolf made for it, it's a good video and he actually explains the game instead of just gushing, also if you have a Wii it's available on the Virtual Console, I highly recommend getting it.

I would also like to add Shadowman, look I'm pretty sure that the guys at Retro Studios were inspired by this game when they made this game, I know some of the guys at Retro Studios used to work with Acclaim's Iguana entertainment, so I'm pretty sure they knew about it, anyway it's a third person shooter/platformer and you explore the world pretty much Metroid Prime Style and there's 2 dimensions a dark underwold one and the real one pretty much like Metroid Prime 2, look just trust me if you liked Metroid Prime play this, preferably the DreamCast version since that's the best one but the N64 version was good too, the PC version was good too but had awkward controls and good luck getting it to tun on a modern PC, just trust me it's awesome, also you're enemies are demons and serial killers and just like Metroid Prime it does atmosphere really well, it's a kick ass game, just play it if you find it, I'm pretty sure it's dirt cheap.

Here's an obscure one:
[img alt=War in Middle Earth]http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/screenshots/full/war_in_middle_earth_01.png[/img]
It's a strategy/RPG hybrid in that you, the player, are in charge of the armies fighting against Sauron and the Fellowship trying to get the ring to the volcano. Interestingly, you are not obligated to keep Frodo alive, keep the Fellowship together, or follow the plot in any way. I've had Gandalf & co. get TPK'd by the Ringwraiths, but managed to salvage the situation by having Faramir's company intercept them on the way back and retrieve the Ring. And then Faramir was the Ringbearer.

Obscure?

Ok, let's play this game.

Cyberia, released in 1994 for pc, later ported to the Playstation, Sega Saturn, and 3DO. I've yet to find anyone else who has ever heard of the game, let alone played it. I never did beat the thing, if only because the later you got in the game, the more it turned into a first-person bullet hell shooter...

Still, I love the game. Couldn't see myself enjoying anything as much as I did this back when I was a kid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoL2j6dgc5Q (For those curious as to what it actually looked like...This is fairly early on in the game, too.)
Cor! I've been looking for the name of that game for almost a decade. My favorite uncle had a copy on his machine and let me play it when I visited him and ever since then, I could not, for the life of me, remember its name in spite of the two of us playing it a fair bit. He couldn't remember it either, so that was frustrating. Thanks for reminding me at long last.

Anyway, in so far as games I liked that I don't think many people might have been able to enjoy or even knew was available, I'm still rather fond of arcade BattleTech. The enclosed simulator pods were extremely immersive for self-evident reasons and it was just plain fun to play. The fact that the hardest difficulties actually demanded a pilot know where to reroute power when damaged, interpret sensor signals, and basically behave like a warrior in a real machine, gave it a charm that even the best Mechwarrior PC games of the time lacked. I only know of a handful of places that ever ran BattleTech pods, and while I know MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries and the new MWO are now rather well known, their arcade cousin tends to languish, which is a shame. It was genuinely engrossing and while not always true to the source material, it was nonetheless fun in a frantic, joystick slamming, trigger happy sort of way.

They originally started on a primitively rendered, self-built Virtual World BattleTech engine, but later they transplanted the MW4 engine in as Firestorm.

For the curious, here's the annoying newbie training video--it covers only a fraction of what the pods' full complexity at the highest immersion setting.

Silicon Valley for the N64. I've never seen any mention of this game, anywhere. It's a game where you play a robot whose body gets destroyed but the micro chip that is your brain survives. And you land on a massive space station that houses a large population of robotic animals that you can take control of once you kill them.

The game is hilarious and very unique. It hasn't aged very well but it's still fun to play every now and then.

Seriously? Find me someone born in the 80's that DOESN'T know Jazz. The sequel was a little obscure, but the original was a popular classic.

I've only played the demo, but yeah, cool game. It was made with Multimedia Fusion, which is the current version of Click Team/Europress's game-maker programs - something I've loved since my Klik 'n Play demo way back when.

I'm not going to continue quoting people, but other than Yoshi's Story and Maui Mallard I can't say I know the other games mentioned.

As for my loved, fairly obscure game:

I used to play the shit out of that game when I was a kid.
I wonder if it's obscure as I always thought it was...

When it comes to obscure games, I like to pull out an old DOS game

"Introducing Donkey Kong Country, the first fully-rendered game EVER. Where YOU gonna find it? NOT on Sega. NOT on 32X adaptors. NOT on CD-ROM. It's only for SUPER NES."

I dissagre, SEGA does have a contender. Here lies....... Vectorman.

You say Duke Nukem, i say Caleb from Blood.

You say Samus Aran, i say Iji Kataiser.

You say Brutal Legend, i say Sacrifice.

You say Super Princess Peach, i say Hyper Princess Pitch.

You say Mass Effect, i say Planescape: Torment.

Speaking of Mass Effect, here is Star Control:

Yep, never got anywhere in it though. I had Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion too, those were fun games. (They were apparently all part of a series of Disney-licensed games released by Sega, which was something I didn't know, actually.)

Actraiser wasn't the best game to open the thread with, but I can at least understand posting it as how many might not have heard of it since so many gamers here only started with the PS2.

My personal obscure favorite is Super Ninja Boy on the SNES. It's like Final Fantasy mixed with Double Dragon. It hasn't aged well, since the random battles are vicious, but a good emulator can alleviate most of the woes.
