So I just watched these movies tonight, and I feel that the only way to ever feel happiness again is if I get a pet dragon and chamillionaire :(

I can't help but wonder if it's a new "thing" in animated movies to have cute animals carry :p

Both of them were superb animated movies due to characters on multiple different levels. They both had it going for them that they had remarkable character designers in charge of initial art as well as Modeling supervision (If I manage to meet people working in Disney Animation studios, I'm going to have to meet Jesus Canal [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1849587/]) that contributed to the highly effective stylized character design they had. Both also had remarkable voice actors, but as always the eternally undersung heroes of both movies were the impeccable works of the animators.

It's a trope that's been around since the 1940 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio_%281940_film%29]s.

For a long time Shrek was by far my favorite animated movie. Then How to Train your Dragon joined him right up there.

How to train your dragon was my close second to the obvious for favourite animated film of the year.
It was just... awesome! You don't get animated films that good as often anymore.

if you said that How to Train wasn't good I was going to go apeshit.

As you didn't, I fucking agree. They're so fucking awesome and full for win.

Every guy I know who watche dit with their girlfriend had her say, "I want one" and they usually agreed.

I love Toothless.

Excellent point there.. Think my comment might've been off the top of my head :p
But I agree with above post.. I loved Shrek, but I appreciate How to Train Your Dragon a lot more now! I think Tangled aswell to be honest..

I haven't seen Tangled but How to Train your Dragon was surprisingly good for a Dreamworks movie, normally Pixar's are much better but I was rather impressed with that one.

I haven't seen Tangled yet, but I have to say, How To Train Your Dragon was a superb movie. Much better than the marketing and the Dreamworks brand implies.

As someone else already said, animal sidekicks have always been an animation trope--especially Disney. For example, the forest scene in Sleeping Beauty where Aurora is walking through the forest and singing to herself used to be much simpler. But it was dull, and Walt Disney noticed that, too. He told the animators, "Needs more cute animals." So, they conceived all of those little gags with the animals that are scattered about, which eventually became this gorgeous and creative scene:

And if that's not enough for you, just look at all of Disney's other classics. Animals played a big role in Snow White, both in the cleanup scene and the final face-off with the evil Queen. The Sword and the Stone had plenty of animal scenes during Arther's training with Merlin. Almost all of the horses in the Disney tradition have personalities, such as in there in Sleeping Beauty, and also the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Aristocats, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, and of course Tangled.

These movies are just examples that both Disney and Dreamworks are tapping back to the basics of good animation, while putting their own personal flavors in them too. They're going back to true character animation, not that gimmicky stuff that relies on the situations the characters are in rather than their own emotions and motivations.

But in all seriousness, I'm a white, blonde, teenage, lizard-owning animation major who never leaves her house. Tangled should have been right up my alley considering all the shit I have in common with the protagonist... and yet it fell short.
There was nothing "wrong" with it - the animation was superb, the script was solid, the songs were okay... and yet I came out of the theater with the same empty feeling that I had when I saw Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Everything in the movie had technically been done right, and yet it had no soul.

I guess I'm just not an 8-year-old girl anymore.

I didnt get to see tangled but I heard it was really good.

But I did see How to Train Your Dragon and it was awesome. Though it seemed rather dark, considering the ending.

I'm gonna spoil it, incase people want to go see it.
<spoiler=You know what I mean>When both the main dragon and his rider lose something. The kid his foot, the dragon his tail fin. I mean seriously, how dark is that for an animated movie? That was like the brave little toaster dark

but yeah, I really enjoyed the HtTYD more then most people thiknk I should have (cause I came close to crying in it near the end) for my age (18)
