Let's see. Most of the time I have a hard time placing the source of the weirder ones.
For a while I kept getting 'asian brides', which is bizarre, and I have literally no idea what that came from. (The obvious sources are places I wouldn't normally go near.)
One thing I get a lot, which is both amusing (and frustrating) is ads for the thing I just bought online, from the place I bought them...
Kind of redundant isn't it?
The worst thing was this ongoing sequence, which was not just weird, but downright upsetting. (I'm infertile for all practical purposes)
First,
- Adds Implying I must be pregnant.
- Later, ads for toys and stuff for small children
- Followed by adds for contraception.
Yeah... That kinda hurts to be honest.
Still, at one point I realised several things.
1. Google ad preferences. https://www.google.com.au/settings/ads
Look at it. Use it. It helps a lot, and tells you quite a bit about what kind of ads you'll get in most places, and why.
It can also be amusing to watch what it thinks your demographic is based on your preferences. (that's something you can turn off if it bothers you. Though it will also pull it from your profile info if you've got google related accounts)
For a really long time it thought I was male, 18-25, even though that's wrong. - Obviously, at some point they must've changed their mind, otherwise I wouldn't have been getting bombarded with pregnancy related ads... (Insensitive much? Oh well. What do you expect from a computer... -_-)
Anyway... Yeah, lots of weird stuff.
Currently they seem to think I'm into Aviation and aircraft (not suprising now I'm a pilot), games, technology, computers, TV and film (sci-fi mainly), and a handful of other stuff that makes less sense. Like defense industry stuff, and maths...
They also seem to think I can speak japanese. Go figure. XD
They've got my demographic data correct for once, but only because they're dragging it from my youtube profile info...
I've deliberately disabled it anyway for general adsense stuff...
One other thing I've noticed is ads are determined based on your public IP address... That sounds insignificant, but I share my internet with another person. So our 'interests' get lumped together somewhat as though we are the same person...
That sometimes results in some weird stuff that is because of the other person, rather than me...
