I am about to turn 16, and I am hoping to get a tattoo for my birthday. I want something that is meaningful or cool. I am hoping for meaningful, but cool is cool. Any ideas?

Can you legally get a tattoo that young? Maybe you should go with some piercings instead.

I'm 22 and have 4 tattoos and 11 piercings. I love them. My favorite is the pair of wings I have on my back.

Just be careful. Those things are addictive as hell.

Well, you should really pick your own tattoo, so it's yours and yours alone.
That being said... a shoop-de-whoop would rock.

I love the irony of asking a videogame forum to pick a meaningful tattoo for you.

You're asking the internet for advice on something that will be on your body permanently. You're either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish, and I'm not convinced those are actually different things.

Do *not* get a full color Jigglypuff on your right shoulder! Trust me, it's not a good idea.

I can't read or hear the word "tattoo" anymore without thinking of this clip from the Canadian film Bon Cop Bad Cop.

Warning: scene is rated PG-13 for dead body, blood, and French

Well, there are some cool video game tattoos out there. That can be meaningful if you're really into gaming. Like those Zelda hearts people get on their chests are pretty nifty.

But, I wouldn't actually get that unless Nintendo paid me buckets of money for using my body as advertising space for their games.

Well first of all there is the obligatory 16 is too young for getting a tattoo, you'll most likely regret anything you get now, blah blah blah.

Second if you need someone else, especially people who don't even know you, to suggest something meaningful then it couldn't really be that meaningful to you. Something actually meaningful to you would have personal meaning you'd need to explain to people who don't know you well.

Coming up with something cool and original takes a lot of time and thinking. If you just get stars or generic tribal, or anything in the classic useless chick tattoo areas (behind ear, ankle, etc) then that's just getting a tattoo so you can tell people you got a tattoo.

My suggestion is to look at a huge amount of tattoos on the internet (google images and BME) for inspiration on stuff you like. Then add in ideas of stuff you are really interested in and will be for a long time, things that are actually big parts of your life.

Fuck, I thought I was the only one who'd thought of that...

In all seriousness, don't do it. Tatoos at a young age typically are a terrible idea. What's meaningful to you now probably won't be in 5-10 years.

Well, I've always been partial to random, tribal-y stuff, like Revy's tattoo from Black Lagoon

Or go with the awesome Bioshock chains.

Oh, and be careful with foreign languages. I've heard plenty of stories about people who got kanji(or whatever) tatoos that mean something insulting.

Bad idea. You're probably too young to have anything of any real, lasting, emotional significance for you yet. Later in life, you'd just end up hating the tattoo.

My advice: Wait a little longer. At the very least until you are 18.

I suggest not getting a tattoo. You'll thank me when you're old and you have a gross faded misshapen tattoo.

I don't think they look that bad when you're old. My late grandfather had a sailor girl tat he got back in WWII, and it was somewhat faded (something fixable with touch-ups and laser removal nowadays) but it still looked really cool.

While I do think 16 is a little young, tattoos can be really fun. Sure their meanings change over the years, but people have been getting tattoos since prehistoric times and the practice is still going.

It's all personal.

I agree, while I said 16 is too young, that doesn't mean you should never get them at all. Who cares if they fade or wrinkle a bit by the time you're old. Your whole body goes to shit when you get old, why would the tattoo be any different or a big deal? Just think of it as adding character to your body. If you lived a real life your body will show it after a while.

Disclaimer: you should wait until at least 18

Now that that's over with: considered the yin-yang? (I have one myself, as do quite a number of people)
There is also the possibility of runes. Not many people know this, but in addition to the common meaning of a letter, each rune stood for a value or concept. If you pick some of the positive ones, they'll essentially be a blessing. (Just check wikipedia...)
Also, if your religious in any way, you probably won't go wrong with your religious symbol.

However, here's a test I'd like you to do before you tattoo anything: imagine yourself showing your tattoo to your grandchildren, telling them why you got it. It's a good way to get an indication of whether you'll regret it or not...

Definetly take your time and get something that defines YOU. Not just for the sake of "having a tattoo." I have 5 tattoos, all quite large and love them all because they all define me. If you really are desperate for that ink, make sure it's a part of you...because it will LITERALLY become a part of you once it's in there.

I myself have a video-game related tattoo...The Heartless emblem from "Kingdom Hearts" on my chest. I love the concept and the idea behind the Heart and it's connection with the mind and spirit of the body, along with hearts being born in darkness and such. So even if it is video-game related, I still think it should represent something a little bit greater than "I love this game!"
