I have a tribal death on my left arm. I know it's not very original cause I have seen at least two pictures of people who had the same tattoo. But I had it done when I was 16 and did not know any better but it's still pretty cool even now and I was totally made in school when everybody found out about that, although I did not do that because I wanted to be awesom, I did it because my parents did not alow me have one and so it was kinda rebel thing to do.
I will get a new one pretty soon. This time it will be one of a kind...I hope. So if you are getting one think about it and think about it good because it will stay with you pretty much to the day you die. And one more thing tattoos don't react well to direct sunlight, it makes them fade.

Your first mistake right there. You should get a tattoo of something you feel genuinely attached to, not something you force attachment on to because you really want a tattoo. I thought about my first tattoo for well over five years before finally getting it and i plan to do the same with my next one. My first, only and last tattoo [unless I get it retouched, which I might soon].
It was done by a friend of a friend. A square 1cm to the side near my elbow. It's not symbolic in any way, I like the way it looks and don't see myself ever tiring of such a mundane shape. It's also discreet enough for my parents not to have noticed it for several days.
This is finally a topic I can respond to and feel like an expert. I have 2 full sleeves, and a lot of stuff done on my legs. First of all, I'll post links to a SMALL sampling pictures.

As you can see, I enjoy art that takes cues from traditional Americana art of the '40s and '50s. The reason behind that is (aside from personal preference) tattoo artwork that is larger, has more defined lines, and uses fewer colors will stand the test of time. It won't always look as good as the day you got it, but it will hold up better than other styles.
Portraits, for instance (look at the last 3 pictures) will not stand up to other forms of artwork in the long run. When I am sixty, those pictures may start to blur together and become an incoherent mess. Personally, I don't care. Look at how rad those damn things are!
Price is something else to consider. Fortunately for me, more than half of my friends are accomplished tattoo artists who have been tattooing for anywhere between 8 and 10 years. I generally give them a tip, but they don't charge me for the art itself. Unfortunately for you, tattoos are expensive. You can expect to pay around 100 dollars an hour for an experienced artist. There are a few pieces of advice I can give you:
1) Find the RIGHT artist. Get to know the artist and learn their hobbies. Chances are, you'll be in their company for a few hours. If you don't connect on any level, it will be uncomfortable for both of you.
2) Be open to suggestions. Trust the artist. They know what they are doing, and you don't. I guarantee you that if you come to an agreement, the artwork will be better than you imagined. Chances are, it will be more fun for the artist as well. If your artist has fun, he will have a new portfolio piece and be more likely to cut you a deal in the price.
3) Tattoo artists are not prostitutes. Just because you give them money does not mean they will do whatever you want. My tattoo artists do not do tribal pieces, only one of them do celtic pieces, and none of them tattoo nautical stars unless it's part of an overall theme (also, no gang stuff, white power stuff, etc.). They simply may not like the artwork or idea you have chosen and decide that they don't want to do it. Come to terms with that. Just because you think it's the coolest thing ever doesn't mean that they will. If they're a reputable artist, chances are they already have enough work laid out in front of them that they can pick and choose what to do. They aren't starving artists.
4) Be calm. Tattoos artists may look intimidating or like rock starts or even inmates. 99% of them are not. You know what they are, though? Nerds. Geeks. Whatever. They all have keen sub-culture niches, and you probably fit into one. I have been tattooed by game nerds, horror geeks, film snobs, alt-country lovers, and vegetarians. I am all of the above. I'm sure you fit into ONE of those. Most artists will have SOMETHING in common with you.
5) If you plan to do your arms, do you elbows FIRST. Believe me, it really, really, really, really, really hurts. The diving helmet in the link above is on my elbow. It is roughly nine inches long and five inches across and smack dab in the middle of my elbow. It was NOT fun.
6) Take care of it. Nothing pisses me off more than someone who spends a lot of money on an amazing piece that turns into a pile of shit because they don't take proper after-care action.
7) Understand that if you get one, you'll probably want more.
8) If the artist works out of their place of residence, DO NOT GET TATTOOED BY THAT PERSON.
9) Don't think too much about it. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but if you stress over what you want, you'll grow to hate it. Most artists hate their first tattoo. Just ask them. Many of mine were done on a whim because myself and the artist thought they would be fun. And we still think they are. This is MY personal preference. Many people on here will tell you the opposite. They are entitled to their opinion, but I like fun tattoos. I don't necessarily like people walking up to me all the time asking "What is that? Why did you get that? What does it mean?" People still do it to me all the time, and I am baffled. What do you mean "Why did I get this?" It's a goddamned double-headed bald eagle, that's why. Because severed cow heads are cool. I also have a giant 666 tattooed on the inside of my arm, and people ask if it's because I worship the devil. I think it's hilarious to piss off Christians, not because I worship the devil. The point is, do what you want. If you want a tattoo right now, go get one right now. There is no need to wait until you "find the right piece". The right piece will strike you and the moment, and your artist will help you come to a decision.

I honestly don't know if I would get one. Not anytime soon, at least. I don't really have the money, nor do I exactly trust any of the local tattoo parlors around here. If I am going to get one, it will be when I go back to the US. I've actually had a lot of ideas for tattoos swimming around in my head. One was going to be on my stomach, but then I realized that if I get a beer gut when I'm 40, that tattoo won't look good. I'd probably get a half-sleeve on my left arm, perhaps a skyline of my hometown with "Never forget where you come from" underneath the tattoo. Now, if I could just picture it in a way that wouldn't look bad, I'd also get "Pura Vida"(Pure Life in spanish) tattooed somewhere, possibly one of my forearms or maybe my upper right arm. The design of the letters, the size, would it have a background, that I have not thought about.
Other than that, I have no idea. On second thought, I guess the one I had planned for my stomach could go on my back or right arm, depending on how detailed and what size I would want it. Basically, it was to be a man sitting in a throne of bones holding the rod of Asclepius. The snake in the rod was to be a king cobra. Half the man would be young(mid-20s), and the other half was to be old(70s or so). The left half would be old, the right half would be young. The old half would be dressed in a white robe. The young half would be showing all the major systems of the body, muscular, circulatory, nervous, etc. Also, the young half would have his hand outstretched. His hand would probably be bone. Oh, and maybe all this would be in front of a tree, and it's roots would be intertwined with the throne. Maybe. I don't really know. That last part just popped up in my head while I was typing this.
Now, these aren't ideas set in stone. Hell, I don't have any other ideas at the moment. At least, nothing worth getting. Some of my other ideas I've crossed out, because when I pictured them they didn't seem right. Shit, maybe I'll get a scorpion, too. Or not. One last thing..I know these ideas aren't the greatest. I'm sure there are others that could come up with ideas for tattoos that are hundreds of times better.

All right, the tattoo gun does sting a little. (Don't go on an empty stomach btw. I learned that the hard way.) I describe it as taking a piece of broken glass and slowly cutting your skin with it. I recommend bringing an Ipod or something because the music will help you think about something else. Oh, after the first few minutes your body will release endorphins which dull the pain (typically they don't eliminate it). Also, do NOT use any blood thinners (Alcohol, Advil, etc) because it will make you bleed more. DO make sure that everything in the tattoo is 100% correct before you get it done. I've got an uneven cross on my arm (which I'm going to get covered soon) and I've got my wife's name tattooed on my ring finger (her name is "Morgan") and the "artist" almost spelled it as "Morqan" (Notice the "Q" instead of a "G"). Oh, and one more bit of info, the closer to the bone your tattoo is, the more it will hurt. I learned that when I got the one on my leg (a dagger through a skull with a banner wrapped around it that says "LIVE FAST LOVE HARD DIE YOUNG"). I've also got a vampire bite on my shoulder (before Twilight and True Blood. It's right above my clavicle with blood that comes over the clavicle and down my chest a few inches), a wolf howling at a moon on my other arm and that's it...for now.JUMBO PALACE said:

More tips: Make sure that your gonna want to keep your ink b/c it's difficult to get rid off. Also, the color black can't be covered up because it will "bleed through".

Oh yeah, don't ever refer to the tattoo machine as a "gun". As someone on the in, they HATE that. Call it what it is...a tattoo MACHINE.

3: It will have to stick with you forever! If you can't cover surgery of getting it removed then you take it with you through out your life. Imagine yourself OLD with a tattoo of _____ on your
