When I was young and dumb...OK, about 5 years ago, I still am young and dumb, but anyway, I got my then-husband's initials tattoo'd on my hip, right there where your jeans pocket is.

Bad already, right? Guess what his initials are? STD.

You should probably get your career going b4 doing that. the professional setting still very much frown upon it. Id say do it AFTER you're already teaching.

You can do it before, just make sure to not show it until you have a permanent rather than flex contract, or, if you are fired, try and get them to say it was about the tat, then you can claim reparatory damages/get the firing annulled.

Edit: Regarding the pain I wouldn't be too worried. If you can take a light being dropped on you I'm sure you can handle a sleeve.

I'd much rather have a light dropped on me than tat a sleeve. The pain threshold does vary, but it's also a very different kind of pain. I can handle one hell of a hit followed by a bad throbbing. The continual stinging and scratching with a superhot needle was horrid. I didn't suffer from any aftermath though, where a friend of mine's couldn't lie down for a week.

Teachers have to cover up tattoos and piercings. So really, you'd be making your life easier by not getting one, or by getting one done in an area that isn't normal on display.

Wow, I've been tattooed by some pretty heavy handed artists and it's never been that bad. I usually just don't want to rub the area too hard in the shower for a day or two. I don't know, I like getting tattooed so maybe my tolerance is above average or something. Still never heard anyone being that sore afterwards though.

Oh also, if you do get a tattoo I recommend using badger balm (to take care of it after), that stuff rocks.
