I like this actually too many games are Americanised now, it would be nice to have a bit of variation with British Culture, such as a GTA:London which could play really nice, just look at how they redid Liberty city.

Surely for a game to "culturally british" it just needs to be filled with British actors?

Good news though, about time our devs got a discount.

Pity this wasn't around earlier, surely Bethesda could have got some breaks my making Oblivion in the UK because of Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean...

It'd be nice to hear a bit of British voicework in games actually made here...
Entertainingly, I'll be graduating uni next year and seeking employment with British game companies, so this is great news. Especially considering my main work I intend to pitch in the next 3 or so years is definitively set in England.

So will we see the Professor Layton devs moving to England, then?
Doesn't Japan have a pretty good relationship (Tax wise) with it's game studios?

I'm British and the only culture I know of is being ambitious but rubbish, where nothing works and we moan all the time.
It's a source of pride for some of us! Just... not me.

Unless this means a "Life on Mars" (the original English version, mind) then I don't care.

I guess by 'Culturally British' they mean the company its self has to be run in a "British" manner, i.e. minimum 40 hour weeks, no pension or health care, discrepancies between male and female pay for the same jobs, institutional racism, and free tea for everyone.
Is there a reason for these discrepancies? Is one party better than the other at performing said task, in which case they rightly deserve more compensation for their work? How do you define institutional racism? Do they see two people, of different skin tones, and choose based on that? Or do they think one party is, again, better than the other?

All I know is, in America white males can't get the same jobs, no matter how much better they perform the job, because the company can't appear racist in any way. And that just sucks.

Netto Raider, In which a chav lets call her britney Croft has to shoplift as much cheap ready meals lager and chips to feed her seventeen mewling kids.

A new Game in the Broken Sword trilogy where you go on a long quest to find some integrity in the houses of parliament.

Dunkirk survivor featuring a quicktime event when our own veterans boo our leader and yet remain silent when the Germans arrive.

Or Olympics 2012 where you are a politician apologising for the lack of facilities, also featuring a sniper section for when Boris johnson arrives.

But in all seriousness its about bloody time our leaders did something sensible!

I think the phrase is intentionally vague and is really just an excuse to stimulate the British videogame market. Tories and Labour have really done a number on the British aviation and defence industries so I guess they want to at least get something right. At least it's better than giving the license fee to ITV.

Heh. Good.

Bloody Canadians getting all the luck. >.<

Well, given it's the industry I'm trying to work in, and the country I live in, this can only be a good thing.

I have mixed opinions about the culturally British thing, usually this means "OMG, we're becoming more American due to the spread of ideas" which is a good thing I see in the long term for an eventual global unity with a minimum of violence.

This is however not a discussion on politics and the long term fate of humanity.

When you hear the term "Culturally British" (or Culturally anything else) the jokes almost write themselves.

On the other hand however a lot of stuff from Britan as far as science fiction (well Sci-Fi/Comedy mostly) and some of their Horror has been pretty good. I can see a bit of potential here if done right.

As far as "GTA: London" goes, all I can say is "meh". I think they tried to revisit this with a strategy game called "The Hooligans" a few years ago and it didn't go over too well.

If they aren't going totally fantasy, I think there might also be some issues with weapons and such in a production given their anti-gun laws and such. I vaguely remember that when they did the British GTA there was some discussion about this, the violence and crime not being as much an issue as the glorification of firearms. It's been a while so I could be remembering it wrong.

Still, I'm partially expecting a "Durham Red" game to be on it's way if this pans out. Largely because the Bloodrayne franchise was allegedly nuked due to copyright issues over the similarity between Rayne and the 2100 AD character. If they made an issue of this I can only assume they were at least pondering the idea of a video game interpetation. Of course other 2100 AD properties translated into video games have almost universally been terrible.

It could be fun to see Bioware do a 2100 AD game based on the D20 rules for it in the spirit of "Knights Of The Old Republic" though I very much doubt this would apply for the benefits mentioned, unless they are planning on giving them to any developers that open a chapter there irregardless of ownership as long as the subject matter is properly British.

As far as old Peter M. goes, well maybe with extra cash to invest he can actually make a game that isn't just good, but lives up to the hype.

I vote for sports games where your team can get to the quarter finals but never actually win.

Or a Blackadder RPG where you have to talk, puzzle and/or swashbuckle your way out of increasingly bizarre situations in a variety of time periods. Your special attack involves throwing Baldrick at the enemy.

(Also, presumably any and all fantasy games made in the future using Tolkienesque races and settings will count. Maybe there'll have to be a sort of litmus test to see if they're sufficiently Tolkieny, but your Standard Fantasy Setting is definitely 'culturally British'.)

I do think this could actually be quite interesting - but more likely it'll mean a slight upsurge in the use of British voice actors and we'll never hear about it again.

(I don't believe I finally signed up for an Escapist login so I could comment on this, of all things.)
