I really need some help!

I downloaded TF2 today - the free gift thing (because I promised not to buy it until after my exams...) and every time I connect to a server it crashes and I get an application error message. The message says:

'The instruction at "0x00010101" referenced memory at "0x09e013c1". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program.'

This happens every time I enter a server. The furthest I've got was running about 5 steps as a scout before it came up. It most frequently appears on the map info screen. The screen freezes and any sounds playing at the time get looped.

I have also received a BSoD twice and have had to reboot.

Has this happened to anyone before? I run on XP and I don't have any fancy video cards or anything. I've tried a few things, such as verfiying the cache, deleting files in the TF folder on my hard drive and setting the launch options to 'autoconfig' (like it says on the Steam website), but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to solve this?

I appreciate any help..! I only wanted to play it for the weekend...

It sounds like your computer has automatically detected you have exams coming up and decided you should study more. You can thank it after you get your grades.

Thats very weird...

Never had anything like that. Hmmm...try to reduce the graphic settings?

If not maybe pre-load again. No idea whats causing it, so those are my best guesses.

I tried reducing the graphics settings, and I managed to get into a game, choose a class and I started playing - then I got BSODed.

No, it's still doing the same thing. Urgh.

hmmm...

You better post it on the official Steam forums on the TF2 section.

Edit: Don't mind the whine and all the random crap. Steam forums are like that all the time when updates come.

I've had this exact same error with another game. I can't remember what the game was, unfortunately, but I remember trying for hours to fix it; I never got it to work. The problem seemed to be with my hardware, which was basic like yours. Since I got a graphics card and new motherboard, every game has worked.

I had this happen twice after the sniper/spy update; most often happens when trying to connect to a server. If it's common enough, then perhaps there's something that Valve needs to fix.

What anti-virus are you running? Norton hates Steam for no paticular reason. I don't think I've ever BSoD with it, but it crashed every time in under 15 minutes.

I used to have that stuff happen all the time, about 95% of servers I'd go on would automatically disconnect me after I started. Then I upgraded my internet connection so it only happens about half the time. Never got an error message though so yours is probably something different.

I had similar problems(not letting me play, crashing frequently) but they're all but gone now, as I've reduced the resolution and set it to work in a window. Maybe it'll work for your problem too :)

I'm running on AVG... I have read that some anti-virus software doesn't like Steam, but I've got friends who run on the same and games work for them. I was hoping I could fix the problem whilst avoiding having to disable or uninstall anti-virus software.

Maybe it's cos I downloaded the free gift? It's a longshot but maybe it's bugged...

That didn't work either...

yeah, mine did that too for awhile, but just either get a better graphics card like Nvidia/a processor(preferably duo core)/if worst comes to worst, get a new computer capable of the TF2 requirements

hope that helps, happy hunting.

right click the game in the steam window

select "properties"

select "set launch options"

in the text bar that appears, type "-dxlevel 80"

It will force steam to use DirectX 8.0 for the game, this might fix the problem.

Give us a name of your Graphics card. If you don't have one, we may have found the problem.
My graphics card is an Intel G33/G31 - I went onto the Intel website and it said it can't be updated because apparently it's a customised manufacturer one.

I tried this too, and that didn't work either.

I'm fearing that I might not be able to play it at all at this rate...
