Team Fortress 2: Important Question

Until recently, my computer ran Windows XP, and had about 100 GB of memory. When I played Team Fortress 2 and Garry's Mod, it ran very smoothly. I mean, a lot. Very little lag and next to no major lockups. Then a virus ravaged my computer and deleted some vital system files, preventing me from booting up my computer. I took that as a sign that I should upgrade my hardware and software. So I got a copy of Windows 7, a new network card and a 1 TB hard drive. My network's wireless router was also replaced; people stepped on it too many times. I had, and still have, 2 GB of RAM. Somehow, that doesn't sound like it'd be enough to me...

After the update, I hooked up my old, 100 GB hard drive and ran a virus scan on it and successfully removed the bug. After, I installed all of my games again. Now, my computer lags a lot and runs slowly, even when playing a local, not-online game, like Garry's Mod. Textures are also really wigging out, with many effects being distorted and blocky, especially light effects. Textures have also been switched around among some of the models; for example, the class selection screen in TF2 usually has a blank background, but, after playing a game for a while, the background becomes replaced with random fragments of achievement icons, usually "Dropped Dead", "Triple Prey", "Shoot the Breeze" and "Semper Fry".

This next problem, essentially, renders TF2 unplayable: it won't register my shots. For example, sometimes, as a Pyro, I hold down the shoot button, but my Flamethrower won't fire. And, when I press it and it DOES shoot, it won't stop, even when I release the button.

My question to you is this: How do I fix this? Please note that I know very little about computers, and whatever help you can offer would be awesome.

Ah dude that sucks. I thought it would be a question about gameplay, but I also don't know much about fixing computers. I hope you fix it though.

7/Vista uses more RAM than XP, more RAM might help the sluggishness. However 2Gb is about what will be left after allocating a 1Gb GPU in a 32 bit OS, so unless you have 64bit 7 then 2Gb should be enough. The other problem could be the performance of your new HDD, is it a 7200rpm model or a green model? What is the buffer size? How do the specs compare with the old drive? That could also be a factor in poor performance.

Did you do a clean install of TF2? Or did you backup from your original drive? You need to do a clean install and then sit through the inevitable huge patch that will come with it (if you have a disc copy), or download the whole thing from Steam again. A massive PITA I know. If this wierd thing is happening after you did a clean install, I'd check with the Valve support guys. They are pretty good in my experience.

I should point out I don't play TF2.

I'd take Octafish's advice and do a clean install. However, after installing my second hard drive, my computer had problems with speed and would crash occassionally. You might need to bring your computer into a shop and install drivers for your new hard drive. It's possible to do manually, but it's also a pain in the ass. Go for the clean install first, then try out drivers if that doesn't work.

I got 64 bit, so I may need more RAM, then. You know what, I think that may be the problem; my XP was 32 bit.

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

Did you try Verify integrity of game cache? this will fix any corrupted files, and you also should update your graphic card driver to the latest or any version that works best for you.

(you should have keep a back up of your driver installers in case new version of driver screws your games)
