TF2 is an extremely polished and streamlined game. Just get in there, pick a class, and start playing. You'll pick it up in no time.

I feel like I need an introductory 2-week course to the game before I even jump online.
I bet you can pick it up in 5 minutes, every map even has a little intro video to expain what to do when you first play it. For a guide just look at the TF2 wiki.

Getting good at it on the other hand...

The game itself offers all the tips you need in game, during loading screen or the player stats screen.

To start playing TF2 pick one of these classes: Heavy, Medic or Pyro. They the easiet classes to pick up and do some damage.

And I don't want to just jump into a game and burden my teammates with my extreme lack of knowledge...
Bless your soul.

What a shameful world we would live in if every noob was obligated to feel worried about "jumping in" because they would be a burden to their team. I don't think anyone should avoid picking up a game because they're worried about "burdening their team," or anything like that. You should feel no guilt.

If they take the game that seriously, then fuck them. I don't mean to be vulgar, but the strength of that sentence is necessary.

If you want to play the game, then that's all you need to play the game. You can pretty safely ignore any QQ that comes from the more experienced players.

My point is: Don't hesitate! With a big smile on your face, suicide charge with the Spy, abuse that plasma-pistol-battle-rifle combo, get treads and Vladimir's on Zeus, snipe like crazy in COD5 with the Springfield, run the same play over and over in NCAA, only use the Lancer the GOW, set off those car alarms in L4D etc, etc ,etc. You can only be a noob for so long, so you might as well enjoy the grief you are causing those hardcore, lifeless, MLG pros.

After all, what should you care about what a bunch of random hateful strangers have to say?

I'm looking forward to all the new players this weekend to pick on :p

I kid, the game is really easy to pick up. Like someone before me has already said, easy to understand hard to master. I still don't have sticky / rocket jumping down.

Another question: Does this game "require" a microphone? I have a headset, but I used it maybe once and not on the computer I'll be playing with. The cord simply may not be long enough. Am I and my team in a major disadvantage if I can't talk with everyone, or can typing/macros be used effectively instead?
A mic will help you greatly, not least because you'll be able to shout SPY! or UBER! at regular intervals, it'll help you co-ordinate with other players to.

You can set the voice to fade out sound effects when people are speaking as well, it's quite a subtle effect but works very well.

But theres character lines that do that already. :p

Its very easy to coordinate a Uber, just look at the medic thats healing you, check if Uber is ready, start running and the medic will follow and uber you. :p

Indeed there are, but they're slow and don't tell anyone what direction the spy is coming from or who he is dressed as. If you have your crosshairs on the spy when you give the command it might say what class the spy is, but it's still slow and inaccurate next to just saying where the spy is.

As for the uber, fair enough, but how do you tell the rest of your team to either come in and back you up or fire off the other ubers at the same time?

Microphone is not totally essential but you're hamstrung without it.

Well...usually when I play I see peope, backing up the ubered people, cause when you see a Ubered guy you know its time to move up/crank upthe defense.

I never used a mic on TF2 and on the 2-3 days I played 7.7 hours(according to Steam) and never seen anyone use a Mic.

Actually since the game was released I don't remenber many people use a mic. Maybe I'm lucky and avoid all Mic users. ^^

It's too late, just skip it. Valve ties all the unlockables to pointless and boring achievements that you will have to grind away at for hours if you want to be up to speed.

"double jump 1000 times"
"light 5000 people on fire"
"Headshot a scout with the sniper while he is the middle of double jump and lit on fire by a pyros flare gun after being backstabbed by a spy who did 30 crabwalks and a backlip"

Well I'm the kind of guy that typically refuses to play a multiplayer component of a game until I play through the single player campaign. When I got L4D, I didn't even browse for an online game until I played through all 4 campaigns single player from beginning to end, because I figured I wouldn't be that helpful online if I was constantly wandering off or getting lost or not knowing all the random intricacies of the game. However, with TF2, with there being no offline component (that I know of anyways) I'm just thrown into the action with a bunch of other people who are relying on me. Obviously there's always an experience curve with online games, but I like being able to at least get my fundamentals down before I team up with others. It's like if I joined the army but didn't get to go through boot camp and was thrown into the battle field on day one.

You don't need the unlockables do be good at TF2. Also theres plenty of easy achievements to do if you bother to read them.

Wrong, they have already stated that they plan to add new ways to get the unlockables instead of the current achievement grind.... Plus, there are a lot of easy achievements to get the unlockables too.

What "unlockables" are we referring to? Do they make a big impact on gameplay?

No they are simply sidegrades to existing weapons you can obtain through gaining so many achievements for each class. The achievements are actually designed to guide new players towards the jobs they should be doing for there team, so as you gain experience with the class you will gain new weapons which can complement the class.
