Ok here's a stupid question. I pre-loaded the game, but it keeps prompting me to purchase the game, or rather, there's no "launch" feature like with my other purchased games. I've never done one of these "free" weekends before. What am I missing here?
It's not the start of the free weekend yet. I think it starts when the update is released.
Oh... well that would explain it but last I checked, it said the free weekend started TODAY, not TODAY @ xx:xx am/pm... I was expecting to jump into this when I got home..
Yeah, Valve works on Valvetime. They tend to do things at their own good pace. It makes stuff better, but its also a bit aggravating. Yet, <a href=http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time>sometimes humorous.
Ha! Valve Time...

I personally have been seduced by this free weekend. TF2 isn't really my type of game, usually I prefer more realistic, slow paced, tactical games. 5 minutes of playing at my friend's house confirmed that I don't like it. But now I figure I should give it a longer try (the Meet the Team videos really make me want to play, so I sort of want to like it). I just pre-loaded the thing, I'm just waiting for the free weekend to start.

What are you so afraid of? Not figuring out the game? Come on, just sack up and sign in. Yes, you wont know the game but you cant expect to be an expert on day one. If you are intelligent, you'll pick it up eventually and get good at it. When did playing games stop being about having fun and become about the achievements?

It's too late, just skip it. Valve ties all the unlockables to pointless and boring achievements that you will have to grind away at for hours if you want to be up to speed.

"double jump 1000 times"
"light 5000 people on fire"
"Headshot a scout with the sniper while he is the middle of double jump and lit on fire by a pyros flare gun after being backstabbed by a spy who did 30 crabwalks and a backlip"
What?

Valve's achievements are the best. Looking down, from tricking an enemy medic into healing you as a spy, to killing someone with the hadouken taunt, they're great fun and not a grind at all. And besides, I don't use many of the unlockables -> they're no better than the stock weapons, only different.

Oh, and as for the OP, yeah, sure, try it. It's easier than CS, easier to get into, and people are friendlier on it. Besides, on the scoreboard you're ranked thanks to your points (basically kills), not kills and deaths, so when you're on 0 points, people will think that you just joined the server! I got into CS 1.6 a few months back, which was an uphill struggle, but I managed it, and TF2 will be even easier.

Ok I still haven't had a chance to play this because of unforeseen circumstances last night, but it looks like some significant changes have been made with this newest update. Has the overall experience been changed? Are current strategies/tips now stale based on the current upgrade?

Never too late to start. You can pick up the basics in an afternoon. Don't be surprised though if you die alot at first. The majority of players know exactly how to play each class.

I'd say TF2 is one of the easiest FPS's to just "jump in" to. You get the hang of it pretty quickly, and at least on the servers I've played at most people are quite helpful and instead of flaming you to death when screwing up try to actually give some advice if they know you're a new player. Obviously there are exceptions, but they're quite rare from what I've seen.

I do recommend starting with some other classes than Spy or Scout though, at least to me those two feel quite useless unless you have a good idea of what you're doing. Especially Spy.

Yeah I'm definitely going to go the Soldier/Medic route to start off with. In a nutshell, what changes did the new update make?

Lots. Sniper/Spy get new weapons and Spy gets some new tricks so he won't get killed that easy(and probably more "noob" friendly).

New maps. Payload Race_Pipeline is awesome.

Achievements for Sniper/Spy.

And finally...a silly unlocking weapon system. Now you get the unlockable guns in a random way. But besides the new crap system, the game is still fun and thats what it matters.

I've obviously seen that Valve is doing a free weekend of TF2. I started to look into the game's mechanics and style, and quite frankly the amount of planning and information involved with just doing simple things like forming a decent class-based team is staggering. I feel like I need an introductory 2-week course to the game before I even jump online. And I don't want to just jump into a game and burden my teammates with my extreme lack of knowledge, nor do I think it's fair for them to guide me through some sort of live tutorial while we play.

I'm willing to learn the nuances of a game if a fun experience can be achieved, but is what is required to be more than a meat puppet achievable in this free trial period? Also, how is the gaming community? Is it open to new users and willing to do a little hand holding, or is it like the Counter-Strike, kill all noobs and declare pwnage community?
I started a month ago, when the Orange Box was only 10 euro's. (Well, that was 5 weeks ago, but I had to wait a week before I could download it. Lousy download limitations)

In public servers AND in possession of a thing called common sense, you're very likely not the worst player around. Heck, I end up top 5 on a 24-player server all the time...

Just take a heavy and shoot everything that moves (literally, shooting your allies checks for spies). That's what I did the first few rounds.
