In Team Fortress 2, Valve have added a mechanic by which if you play with that character long enough, you will get an upgraded weapon or a different piece of equipment if you play with that character long enough, eg. If you play with the Sniper for long enough, you will get a bow instead of a Sniper Rifle.

However recently I haven't been able to upgrade my weapons for any of my characters and recently Valve released some new weapons for both the soldier and the demoman, but I have been playing with these characters for some time now, and no upgrades have been given.

Can you offer any help to my problem?

I don't think you're clear on how it works. But then, I'm not totally sure either. As I understand the weapons are unlocked as you complete milestone achievements for the classes. In addition, they can also be found like any other weapon as a random pickup.

I agree, it's a little unclear. I wish there was something in game to clarify it a bit more.

The game is clearly worth playing regardless though. I bought it for 10 bucks and I'm not sure I've EVER bought a game for that price and gotten this much raw enjoyment out of it.

Item drop rates are too damn low, you'll get them faster doing achievements instead.

I have over 200 game hours and I still havn't got any hats, xept those that you get for free. Sure I have some upgraded weapons but it's maybe 100 hours in between I get anything worth keeping! :D

I think since the Soldier/Demoman update, the drop rate for stuff's gone way down. At least for me, it has.

The milestone-item-getting-thing still works okay though.

Just use bots to farm the achievements.
That seems so counter productive. I personally enjoy the challenge of trying for various achievements.

You are a little misinformed.

First of all, they arn't weapon upgrades, they are alternatives. Each weapon has its own advantages and disadvantages over the ones that occupy the same slot. Each is good in their own situation if used properly.

Second, the drop rates are a random calculation, sort of like flipping a coin. Even if you get heads for 100 flips straight, which is possible just not probably, the possibility of getting a tail remains the same. It doesn't matter which class you play, you get random drops of ANY in game item for ANY class at the same rate, except hats which are a tad lower.

Third, if it really bothers you, the quickest way to get items in a guaranteed fashion is to do the achievements. Usually getting milestone 3 isn't a HUGE issue, and the time spent getting achievements you are sure to get a bunch of random drops as well.

As for the hats, I don't see why people fret about them so much. Are they awesome? yes. Do they affect gameplay? No (except when a spy disguises as you, easier to spot) If you really want a hat that badly just play more, or craft one.

Just keep at it? And hopefully you'll get it?

I dunno I play it on the 360, but I know if you just keep playing your bound to get it over time

You seem to misunderstand the unlock system.

Their's two ways you can get the extra weapons.

One is by getting the achievements, in your achievement's menu there are milestones, getting each classes' milestone will get you a new weapon for that class.

The other is random drops. Which have been explained already.

Some of the hats can no longer be unlocked as they had specific criteria, like the Halo, Bill's hat and The Soldier's medal.

I know your pain!

I've yet to get anything useful from random drops, got all the other interesting hats though...
