i click to play TF2 and it starts the "preparing to launch Team Fortress 2" thing and then it exits. like i clicked cancel.

i recently moved steam and all other games to another hard drive but i have uninstalled and re-downlaoded TF2 twice, i also recently let steam update my ATI drivers.

anyone help me?

i have tried running it as an administrator, tried running it in windowed mode, tried running it in 32-bit mode, nothing did anything.

It's possible that the task manager is running it twice, so it thinks you're playing.

I'd check the steam forums or contact support about it.

I have had the exact same problem, literally I get the same result as you (the preparing to launch dialogue just disappears), have taken the same steps to try and fix it (windowed mode, safemode, redownloaded etc) and just let Steam update my ATI drivers.

No solution as yet which is really irritating as I'd just bought a new computer specifically to run TF2. I've contacted Steam support but it would appear they don't work on a weekend.

Let me know if you get a solution.

Obvious question: have you tried restarting your computer?
Second obvious question: have you verified the integrity of the game cache?
Third obvious question: have you deleted ClientRegistry.blob (when Steam is shut down, obviously)?

i restarted 3-4 times, i verified integrity of the cache 4 times but i haven't tried the ClientRegistry.blob, what's that?

OK then. Close down Steam (on the client: Steam > Exit), go to where you installed Steam (default: C://Program Files/Steam) and you'll see a file called "ClientRegistry.blob". Delete it (or rename it, it'll have the same effect) and then start up Steam again. Steam will update, and then log in.

(It goes without saying: connect to the internet before you start Steam up again).

This method solves a surprising amount of Steam bugs.

I'd delete and re-install Steam, sounds like some required files/directories have been confused or lost.

i doubt it, i've deleted and re-installed TF2 twice so those files are there (aswell as verified the interity of the game cache several times) and all my other games are absolutly fine so it must be something else.

plus, it's like 100GB of games i'd need to download again and i really don't want to do that, particularly since it'd put us over our limit for the months internet.

I'd contact Steam about it. They have great customer support.
i did that, i'm just looking to see if anyone can offer advise until steam replies.

When in doubt, check to see if your graphics driver is the latest version and update as necessary.

i checked them several times, as i think it's ATI since this has happened since i updated and i google showed this happening before.

also, TF2 will now start, show a guy with a tap in the back of his head, tell me that it uses the source engine and then crash.

PROGRESS!

Did you try deleting '/username/tf2' ? It probably isn't erased when you uninstall tf2. (Once it's deleted you won't have to reinstall anything, steam will build it from the tf2 content files elsewhere.)

Try deleting the Team Fortress 2 folder (Steam>steamapps>username>tf2), or doing a system restore. But, I doubt a system restore would work.
