So I plugged in my portable music player tonight, a sony walkman. And out of nowhere every WMA
files appears to be a Nokia OVI file in every way, except in 'properties' it will still be listed as WMA. Which wouldn't be a problem, only they seem to be incapable of playing in media players. They work fine on the device, but it's just a hassle, say, if someone were to put some music on there for me which I then wanted to play on my PC, or vice versa.
I'm really more annoyed than anything else. Those stupid pink icons are fucking annoying.
Does anyone know what's happening?

You need to distinguish between file formats and codecs.
A file format is just a container you put code in.

That way a .avi, .mgp, .wma or ovi file can be:

divx, mpg, h263, xvid, raw, wmv/a, cinepack, mp3 etc pp

So something is maybe changing the file-extension but the codec stays the same.
