Steal your dads wallet, this will will not only make the internet problem go away, but it will also make you warm and happy inside.

Giving a crappy old XP computer to your kid could be considered an insult or lack of insight on the grups behalf. Therefore you must take matters (dads wallet) into your own hands!
yes warm and happy from the not-soup-kitchen -soup in my stomach. now if only i could extend my arms 300 miles and disengage his spider-sense like power of knowing when something of his is getting nicked.
I know, but you know I'm only kidding.

Are you saying your computer is nine years old? 'Cause I may have an idea of what's wrong...

Also, for someone writing a Masters Thesis, your grammar is lacking.

Okay for serious dude, check and make sure all the cables are plugged into your computer right as well as the modem. What kind of router/modem are you using and have you tried just restarting the computer?

Also, what computer are you on the internet with now, and why not just use it to download any drivers you may need, put them on a flash drive and use that to install on your PC?

Finally go to your network connections page, you should be able to access it from your start menu or control panel. Check to see if your computer is even recognizing the connection or the modem and if it is, check out the properties, run some scans and see if the computer can repair it. If none of that works just try and call your internet provider and have them walk you through the steps of getting online.

No of course it's not valid, it was a small joke, what the hell is your problem with everyone, it's not their fault that you can't drive Windows XP.

EDIT: that's @ soperg. Obviously.

First you need to get an internet service provider and start paying for internet. They give you a modem (little box) to connect your computer and phone line to which magically gives you internet.

Assuming I read wrong and you're past all these stages, explain more about the moden and internet service provider.

working on it but hard to do when i run into idiots like you.
Im just sitting here on the sidelines, and I have to ask, is that helping? The yelling at random people on the internet?

Because it seems that people are being dicks to you because you're being a dick to them, and you're being a dick to them because they are being a dick to you. Someone has to break the cycle here.

Also, if I read you OP correctly, you had the computer for 2 years, and now you're trying to hook it up to the internet?

i'm being mean to these many incompetent fools because they asked invalid questions, the one's whom have asked useful questions that were NOT addressed in the opening thread i have been very kind to, such as you. also people whom are making COMPLETELY unrelated comments, such as the grammar nazi's/trolls.

Can you turn user account control off in XP? I'd suggest doing that if you can.

condescendence, i sense it, also, i don't think of everyone as an idiot, only those whom give the inattentive attitude. if they read the the opening thread i wouldn't have to, how you say it: TROLL SMASH!
i've actually done everything these people have suggested and have shown acceptance to the valid points sprinkled amongst them. also: it works fine. its just the internet im having problem with. i only hate everything about the computer connected to the internet the computer itself works at the minimum requirements i ask of it. i just want the internet to work so i can email my teachers my assignments because i can't exactly walk to their house 10 miles away or however far away they live (distance not being the problem, creepy stalker behavior being it.) and drop it into their mailboxes. i only rage on those whom give me the impression of idiocy.

you're kidding me with the before i was born thing right? they owned it before i was born, do you seriously think they'd wait 22 YEARS with this thing in the closet to give it to me?!?!?!? they've been using it and upgrading it since. man your logic sucks beyond belief. ALTHOUGH you make a fine enough point with my anger issues and after 9 hours of dealing with thi im sure you'd need a therapist too. im trying to hold onto my sanity after talking on my phone for 3 hours so im entitled to being in a raging mood. tyvm.

The router might have come with a disc with device drivers have these been installed? (assuming you have them)
but i didn't need them to go on the mac. is PC really so retarded it can't just say " OMG INTERNETZ! *build masterpiece*
Macs have standardized hardware, thus the same drivers in every Mac of a certain model. It's the same reason you shouldn't have an issue with a brand new brand-name PC. As it is, assuming it's not a brand name, you might need to find and install drivers.

Also, I know you said you checked everything, but you might want to make absolutely sure the network adaptor is completely in it's slot. These things shift over time. Not a lot, but on an older computer it could be just enough to make it not work.

This sounds like a standard problem I have had with vista and my first laptop which had XP on it.

Go to Control Panel
Network connections
Right click Local area Connection>Properties
it's either internet protocol 4 or 6 either way >Properties
select []Obtain BLABLABLA Address Automatically

If you have trouble looking for network connections via control panel, locate your network and sharing center and select a tab for manage network connections, this will take you where you need to be.

and before you ask internet protocol 4 and six should all be obtain [insert here] address automatically

This thread has turned into a troll smash thread more than a help the noob thread.

Have you tried going into internet explorer settings, Tools, Internet options, connections tab, click on LAN settings, then enable the "automaticly detect settings" box?

Grammar Nazis bog off, I've had enough beers to not care about it, it's 3 am here.

Hence my second point about the possibility of the card shifting.
