Artist: Childs
Album: Yui
Songs: 10
Genre: Post-Rock or Ambient
Favorite Track: Mariana
Other Standout Tracks: Yui and Reki
I can't even remember when I found this artist, im thinking I was on Last.FM listening to Sigur Ros radio and this came up, I don't know, maybe God put this on my iPod as some good deed, but how ever it got on there its probably the best album I forgot about.
After Googleing around for the band Childs I found out they come from Mexico, they call there music "Futuristic Lullabies" which would probably be an accurate description, they say there music is inspired by anime aesthetics, icelandic elfin pop, sounds from the shoegaze era and indie rock "all this information comes from last.fm".
The album starts off with a soothing sound off children playing in a park and what I would call a electronica sound that reminds me of ocean waves and then a chorus starts singing, ahhhh, the emotion I'm having I can only describe as having a reassurance that everything will be alright, the chorus continues from the intro track into the song yui, it gets a little bit faster paced when you hear the guitar, I have to say the only reason I enjoy this track anymore then the intro is around 2:20 it goes into what is almost a silence and around 3:10 you feel a sense of climax as the Guitar, Violin and Childrens chorus starts singing. Is it bad that the album already Climax'd in the second track? Have you ever watched a movie and wanted it to just go on a little longer to see the happy ending play out? thats how I would describe the first three songs of this album. With the next songs opening lyrics being "your, so fine" it is like your favorite feel good movie just went on for another 30 minutes so you can see the long awaited couple live out there lives in bliss.

The Following Track called S.A.D. is probably my least favorite on the album, but near the end of the song you start hearing a whimpering voice and the lyrics you hear are something like "Death makes something something alive", now for those of you have seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, it sounds alot like Commander Akari's voice. The Following track called Reki really kinda made the album for me, you hear sound clips of NGE play, The second I heard Commander Akari's voice say the "Angels seem to be getting more intelligent" I was in awe. Do I think you have to be a Neon Genesis fan boy to enjoy this part of the album? No the specific soundbites taken out of The series are all following the same theme of the album, which is reassurance, this album makes you feel safe. Its one of the few albums where following the same routine only increases the albums power it has on you.

The rest of the tracks are pretty standard affair, with the exception of one, Mariana, I don't know what is real meaning behind this song, the first line(s) of this song is in Japanese, and I haven't taken the time to find out what its saying, its sounds like he is repeating the same thing over and over again, then you hear the same guy say in English, "She never woke up" more Japanese "September, 21, 1949" something about the lines had immense impact on me, there was something really depressing about these lines, I don't even know who "She" is and I find a churn in my stomach, as if something wrong, but its this moment of sadness that makes the last, 3 minutes of the song which chimes a optimistic tune a lot more powerful.

Bottom Line: Its not ground-breaking, its not the best album ever made, but it defiantly has emotional impact.
I would base my recommendation on rather or not you enjoy slow music, for people who like Sigur Ros would probably find it a really easy and enjoyable listen, others maybe not so much.
Also: as a side note this is the first review i've written, criticism welcome.
