Tekken Boss Would Rather Quit Than Sell Characters

The core Tekken experience will remain free to all players.

Katsuhiro Harada, the lead producer of the Tekken franchise, has stated that he would strongly consider leaving Namco Bandai rather than adding characters as paid DLC.

Central to Harada's design philosophy is the idea that everything core to the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 experience should be available for free. "Regarding techniques, characters and stages," he told Eurogamer, "these three things won't be charged for, even if they are DLC." Even characters available as pre-order bonuses will be opened up as free DLC a couple of months after the release of the game. For this reason, he says, some amount of on-disc DLC will be present for technical reasons, so that players who have unlocked certain characters can easily play against those who haven't. He feels, though, that this shouldn't be an issue as all the content will become freely available anyway.

This stance against paid content puts Harada at odds with publishers, who he says continually ask him how they can make more money out of the series. The solution, in his eyes, is to have payable cosmetic features. For instance, fan demand for retro soundtracks and old ending cutscenes has been high, and Harada says that these would be items he'd be willing to offer for sale. He is unwavering in his resolve when it comes to characters, though, saying that "If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit... Or maybe I would just say 'get someone else to deal with this.'"

In an industry where more and more content is being set aside to be sold as add-ons at a later date, it's refreshing to see a producer so staunchly defending the integrity of his game's core mechanics, especially in a genre where having all players on a level field is so key.

When's the next flight to Japan? This man deserves a handshake for standing up to that bullshit.

This is a refreshing turn from most other developers and publishers that would much rather sell you a large part of the game for 60 dollars and then sell you the rest piece mail over time in little 5-20 dollar portions.

This just in. Tekken boss fired, Namco Bandai set to release DLC characters next week.

Now, this above scenario wouldn't surprise me at all D:

Same here, Namco would pull this shit if they could. And the neckbeards will still buy it.

It warms my heart knowing this guy is working on the new Smash Bros game...
now to balance that unchecked happiness with a bit of cynicism: so, how long until the suits fire him?

I have no interest in Tekken. None at all. That said, if he manages to convince the studio to go through with this, I will likely buy a copy and send a letter to the company letting them know why I did. Will it ultimately matter in the long run? Probably not. But it will allow me to feel smugly superior for supporting a cause I believe in, and that's worth it.

I don't believe him.

There's a good chance that this Tekken will be free of DLC characters, but I highly doubt that the series won't eventually come to that. It's just the way the wind is blowing in the industry these days.

My experience with Tekken is almost entirely limited to watching the Bob-fest on the Evo 2011 stream. I think it goes without saying that did not predispose me to liking the franchise, but this story helps.

Capcom, are you reading this?

Well, probably not. This is a forum on the Escapist. And you're a Japanese company that thinks people love Resident Evil's story so much it needs 4 hours of cutscenes, and apparently nobody would buy Mega Man Legends 3...

Still, Harada... I want to e-mail him a Christmas ham or something. This guy's philosophy on fighting games is just so PERFECT, I can't help but think Namco will want him fired as soon as possible.

The wind is certainly blowing that way, but Tekken is a huge franchise, if it can make money in other ways then it might begin to change things (at least as far as fighting games are considered).

While not a fighting game, DotA2 is pushing the same philosophy, which is a nice change from LoL, HoN, Bloodline Champs, etc etc.

So there are enough important figures at least trying to stop the current industry trends.

On Gamestop.com preordering this game costs $60. Can we strive for a little more clarity? I know perfectly well what you meant but lately the definition of 'free' seems to be a product that costs any amount of money whatsoever. Am I being obnoxious? I know in this instance people are not likely to be misled, I just don't think it's a good idea to let ambiguity and misdirection reign.

Yes, Harada-san, we get it. We all (Tekken fans, anyway) love you and want your man-babies.

Just leave enough kickass alternate costume options in the core game and we'll be golden.

On a slightly different note, though, it may very well come to a point where this DLC shit gets phased out of fighting games. I'm not exactly counting on it, but given the poor reception of Street Fighter X Tekken due to the bullshit business practices employed alongside it, I think there's a small chance that fighting game developers may reconsider the notion of paid character DLC.

Can't speak for other genres, though. Aren't those Call of Duty and Battlefield paid subscription thingies making loads of money?

Yeah, we're fucked.

I don't mean to be overly pessimistic. It just seems logical to me; companies are, presumably, making money off of DLC like that. Companies are always looking to maximize profits, and I don't think this kind of DLC would hurt Namco's image enough that they wouldn't consider it. Game publishers don't seem to care much about their image these days anyway.

Great, another game no one will be able to fully enjoy if they come across it in ten years time. If the DLC is free, why bother at all? Why not just start work on the next game immediately and make sure the game you've just released is actually enjoyable enough to keep us happy till it's sequel is released?

Not Obnoxious, just Pedantic.

The exact same thing most of the games I own with tons of DLC do.

Remarkable.
