Tell me why people hate Hickeys!

So the last time my girlfriend was here, she and my neck were getting real acquainted. A few days later my mother finally saw the "dreaded hickeys" and oh my god you should have seen her face. She said (and I'm paraphrasing, bad memory and what not) "What is that on your neck!? (insert my name here) nobody does that anymore!!! We did that when we were 16!" I know she said other things about it but I don't quite remember much other than "You better cover up when you go out in public"


Now I really must ask, what is so "wrong" about hickeys!? If anything they're a sign of affection! I really can't understand the logic behind some people's hatred of the hickey.

I agree. It's kinda weird when my friend says "I'm going to my girlfriends house", then the next day he has hickeys everywhere.

I was at the statefair one day, and the previous night my girlfriend had given me a hickey. EVERYONE commented on it, including my friends, the jock guys i hardly even know, my girlfriend's sister, my dad; even the guy riding a damn dragonfly-bicycle in the parade yelled out to me "Hey, it looks like you got a little rash there on your neck!"

Because people are jealous, that's all there is to it. Best of both worlds is just to not have hickeys in visible places. But at least you're getting some, so grats on that.

They're fun to give and they feel great to receive. I can understand how your parents wouldn't want to see the marks though...if done right (or wrong I should say) it looks as though you were letting a lamprey nurse on your jugular vain.

Granted there are worse marks to be found on your (or your significant other's) body.

Because the hickey is not a sign of the sort of platonic love that we're comfortable with, but instead of a somewhat more intimate physical love that Americans tend to be rather uncomfortable with. Having a visible hickey is like wearing a big sign telling everyone exactly what you've been up to, and for people who aren't ready to deal with the reality that people are intimate with one another, it's not a reminder they like.

Okay yes, but why do people make such a fuss over it? If anything people should be proud for me (well the people who know me and the people who have seen it.....although so far it's only been my mother, my brother (maybe) and a friend of mine) If I saw a guy with hickeys on his neck, I'd give him a god damned high five
