I'd go back to the time of Jesus' crucifixion. Hopefully I can dissuade them from having him killed. "I tells ya, he's gonna be back! Don't bother now, it'll just make his followers even more ornery! Just go send 'im off to some island out in the Mediterranean or somethin'. For the love of God get him down from there!" With any luck, I could stop Christianity's into Europe and thus preserve the Vikings. If missionaries came to the New World bearing the message of Thor and Odin and whatnot, it'd be a much more interesting world.

Can this be utterly self-serving?

I'd go back in time and give myself a copy of Harry Potter and explain that for some weird reason people will get really into the idea of Wizard Boarding School. I'd give an outline of the series and some suggestions on how to improve it. Just flat out say that Dumbledore is gay, Voldemort is Harry's Dad, etc.
Sure L.B., but I don't think it's gonna work...Remember Meg and Mog, Tim and Tobias, The Worst Witch, Billy Bunter, Winker Watson, St. Trinians all paved the way for it to work. It's more about timing.

Book for you to read : More What If? : There's a quite heartwarming story of "What if " Pontius Pilate had spared Christ? by Carlos M.N.Eire. Very good reading.

I dunno, given the mainstream success of the book I think as long as I explain to my past self to keep the whole orphan thing, cruel step-parents, and discovering he's the chosen one formula, the rest will sell itself. I'm assuming most of those soccer moms and families don't have an extensive background in fantasy...it's always a person and a moment though. I'll warn him to wait until 1997 to publish.

And knowing Fate, that's the one day you'll have to go into hospital to have an operation, but your publisher, a Mrs. Rowling, decides to publish it anyway. ;)

Go back to various eras in time to spread brandston pickles all over no more heroes to end the universe,
just to watch how it'll look(probably awesome). of course from there I'll go back to before I did so to warn my self not to so that life may continue.

make sure al gore wins the election against bush, just to see how it could've been.

go back in time to meet my self and take over the world with an army of me's

Somehow make yahtzee the master overlord of the world

Bring modern day game consoles(scratch that, previous generation) back to the past so we may get even more awesome versions of the classics and watch the game industry evolve from there

And of course,Kill and/or defame jack thompson before he becomes a lawyer

I've always wondered what it would be like if Norse was the main relgion. Then I'd imagine the world somewhat like Too Human's going to be.

Peggle... hmm maybe. But maybe Okami so he can see how beautiful a game could be.........
or maybe bigrigs or aquaman so instead of calling games the devil's faeces, he'll think of them as all complete bullshit

I wouldn't dare to change anything. Sure, the ideal thing to leave would be a nice instruction manual to myself of exactly what to do, but I'm afraid just by changing one small thing I'll destroy something good I have in my life. If I tell my younger self to avoid going to the school I was bullied in I would also lose one of the happiest times of my life, when I practised with my band the few days before going on summer vacation. I might also not get into the relationship I did with my first girlfriend, I might not start LARPing, etc. I could lose out on so much. The only things I can reasonably guarantee myself is money, material possesions, more knowledge and changes in my physique (telling myself to work out more or train kendo or something from an early age). I can't however guarantee myself the relationships I have, or happiness, or any social competence.

Another thing that worries me is that, if I do this, would I benefit at all from it? Either we have one time-stream and I've already done this, with no effects since I threw the note away and forgot about it. Or the timestreames merge in some nice way and I don't remember the changes. Or I create a separate universe where my other me is really have and I'm not even aware about it.

...If i went back, i'd leave you that picture of the octopus and the fisherman's wife with a message that stated. "Don't make this thread, you'll burn the eyes of many an innocent man."

Manga wouldn't exist. At all. You know why? Manga was created after the war, after the bomb hit Hiroshima as a way to quickly get new books out. It was a way to massproduce drawings, that's what caused the distinctive drawing style, it's easy and fast. They were trying to replace what they'd lost in the war with the new form of media.

If Hitler won then that wouldn't have happened. You also don't know what would have happened afterwards, if Hitler and the Japanese won, if they were content with each other or if they would just go berserk and kill each other as well. If Hitler had the plans for nuclear missiles he feels like the guy who could literally bomb Japan back to the stone age. Even if things worked out during the war as you wanted it to there's no guarantee that Japan would keep Australia and that it would receive enough rights for you to be able to get the (still non-existant) manga.

I realize you're not being overly serious, but this is the thing I'm so afraid of, one little "innocent" change can cause so much to happen, so that you'll never get what you really want. Time travel is annoying.

indeed very interesting, but ideas are invunreable so naruto and all that other shit would still have been thought of. it just would hvae been produced in a completely different way...but then again the endsings would be different. BLAST FOILED AGAIN! :D

Save the dodo!

Edit: Actually, after having read the thread properly, that probably wouldn't work. I still want a dodo though...

I wonder if it would be possible to go back in time and leave an object, or to influence people/persons so that one could be ruler of the world... or at least a significant part of it... I guess with some sort of religion, or if you somehow 'prophecised' (heh) the birth of a saviour in the future with your specific birthmarks and details.... hmmm, I'd try that - I'd like to be ruler of the world :)

Go back to Jesus' time, and show him the world of christianity as it is today... And tell him to right doiwn in his own words exactly what he means right now and to tell all the disciples to only pass on that message, with no spin

oh and go back to John Major, and slap him about the head re EU, and shoot tony blair before he gets anywhere near number 10
