Time to get a bit old school. I just re-installed this one today and decided to bathe in the nostalgia.

I first got my play through of UT back in 1999 when my uncle gave me a bootlegged copy and told me he always had so much fun playing it. But enough about that, lets get to the good shit.

The game itself is an arena based first person shooter plain and simple made by Epic Games for the PC and later released on the PlayStation 2 and Sega Dreamcast (those versions were not well received). The game has a multitude of game play modes including the old standbys i.e. death match, team death match, CTF and a few other modes. depending on what game play mode you're using, your list of available maps will also change. The exception is the death match variants, as they both share the same list of maps.

Unreal Tournament's list of maps is quite varied for a game of its time. Maps can go anywhere from an abandoned garage to a castle floating above multicolored storm clouds, to a multi-leveled toxic waste facility complete with green goo on the bottom floor that will kill you.

It also has online multiplayer but its been 10 years so all your really going to find today is Unreal Tournament's version of Starcraft's South Koreans. Back in its heyday, the multiplayer scene was huge not only for the stock game play, but also for the modding community that it had. Sadly i had a pretty pathetic internet connection back then, and wasn't able to play online, but i doubt it was much different from other PC first person shooters.

Now if I remember correctly, Unreal Tournament was released around the same time as Quake 3 Arena was released and so it was a sort of unannounced competition between the two. Quake 3 in some people's eyes had the better graphics, but in my eyes Unreal Tournament had far superior bot AI. Yes, we had GOOD, nay, GREAT bot AI in 1999. Ninety five percent of the time the bots are doing what they should be doing, killing you, or helping you kill your opponents.

The weapons of UT are in my eyes classic. it ranges from a basic sidearm pistol to all the way up to a remote controlled nuke. all weapons have an alternative fire which can help mix it up depending on your circumstances. they're all very balanced and there are some mutators that you can use that can switch all weapons out on a map for just one of them (example being all weapons are sniper rifles, rockets, and so on.)

One of my favorite parts of the game is the soundtrack. the background music in Unreal Tournament is one of the best I've heard in a game. The classic tune that all Unreal Tournament fans know is "Go Down" heard when playing on the map called "Deck 16" Epic Games made sure that every song fits its respective map. If your fighting in an old castle during a thunderstorm, the music is creepy with a techno underlining.

Overall I loved Unreal Tournament. The graphics may definitely show that this game is 10 years old, but the game play is just as solid as some of today's shooters. It can even hold its own against its most recent descendant Unreal Tournament 3 (which is one of my favorite games of all time) When it comes down to it, Unreal Tournament is one of the greatest shooters ever made. It might have been slightly overshadowed by Quake 3 but if you can find a copy of this game, install it and have a bloody good time.

This is always a mandatory play for every LAN party I attend.
Same, its not a lan party unless you get to hear about what happened in "2291 in an attempt to control violence among deep space miners"
