Ruminating on exploitation and extreme schlock cinema? Sounds like a job for Brad Jones. His review of Salo is still one of my favorite Cinema Snob videos.

Not to mention he did a video of Cannibal Ferox, if any of you are curious about those movies but don't have the stomach for them I would check out Cinema Snobs videos on them, you might also get a craving for bubble tape

This was also an interesting read, you should do some more of these types of articles

I was tricked into watching Salo by some friends. They literally said I should watch it and prohibited me from reading the description on the back. It was a veiled challenge. As they have pretty much the same movie tastes as me and usually very good recommendations I went with the flow. I watched it alone, in my house. By the end I was clutching a pillow, squirming with disgust and nausea by every new scene and wondering why on earth I was doing this to myself. Endurance prevailed and I saw it to the end. I still feel a little bit of my soul died that night. My friends feel the same about themselves.

seen ilsa, salo and visitor q.
Funny/not a bad movie, didn't feel shocking/hilarious.

I don't know what it was about visitor q, but I laughed out loud during that movie... oh no wait, I think it was the umbrella milking scene.

Yeesh, sounds like some pretty grueling stuff. Probably won't see them, but interesting article all the same. You should do some more lists of stuff like this, you're usually the guy I go to for references to the more obscure films.

Yes, I myself heard about Visitor Q, and was my first Miike film to watch. Me and my friend were horrified, yet addicted and could never stop the dvd. I just wonder what exactly in our psyche actually makes us "enjoy" these movies? Anyways, for what it is worth I might suggest a very bizarre Japanese movie that is not as depraved as others but has one particular scene that you will never forget. Tetsuo: The Iron Man; just one word....drill.

Shit, you're right. I forgot he also just did Cannibal Ferox. That one was good, but how he reviews Salo was just hilarious, absolutely skewering the arguments art-house twits made in favor of that horrid movie.

The [edit]second[edit] saddest thing about Cannibal Holocaust is that it was actually a pretty decent movie (or would have been, depending on how much you're affected by the animal cruelty). It will never (and should never) be fully appreciated because of those bad choices.

I'm not saying the acts in the film are necessarily enjoyable to watch (lots of dismemberment, lots of rape... lots), but I found the whole presentation damn effective. Damn, I say.

Being a fan of practical special effects, kudos must go to the director for having to prove in court that his human-oriented special effects were fake... of course, he probably wouldn't have had to do that if he hadn't put real animal slaughter in the film... so kudos taken back. Damn, I say.

Oooh. Thanks for this, Bob. A friend of mine and I are always seeking out the most fucked up films we can find, though admittedly I haven't seen any. We just like talking about them. We have the fullest intention of watching them some day. I think it's high time I trained my stomach.

Interesting. Saw Salo and Make Them Die Slowly years ago during various Incredibly Strange Film Festivals. Honestly, I wasn't particularly impressed by Salo. I'm pretty sure I stayed to the end but I just zoned out after an hour or so. Without the shock factor it's an appallingly boring and drawn out experience. Make Them Die Slowly I barely remember either, but that may have been the vodka ;)

EDIT: That wikipedia article on Unit 731 on the other hand made my blood run cold. I knew the Japanese army was notorious for committing atrocities during the Sino-Japanese war but this is the very first I've heard of this. That's some seriously hard to digest history. Makes it difficult to be proud to be a human being.

Oh hey, Visitor Q! I didn't expect a movie I've watched (nay, a movie I own on disc) to be on the list. I've only seen it once and yeah...it's a brutal, brutal, BRUTAL movie that would probably only confirm everyone's worst misconceptions about the depravity of Japanese cinema. I really liked it though and greatly enjoy Takashi Miike's films in general.

Martyrs

Anyone who as seen it knows what this means. I've seen most of the films on this list (except Salo, just say no to fecal porn) Martyrs was the only one that stayed with me and haunted me for a good long while.

I would sincerely like to recommend such timeless Japanese classics like 'Flower of Flesh and Blood' and 'Mermaid in a Manhole'. The Gini Piggu ones! Just watch 'em. just do it.

I haven't seen any of the movies that MovieBob specifically recommended, however, I have seen Men Behind the Sun and it did ruin all other horror films for me. The pressure chamber scene was definitely an insane highlight.

I haven't seen any of the films listed, and I'm OK with that (although The Horrors of Malformed Men does sound interesting).

Same thing happened to me a few years ago, I'd heard of Japanese abusing PoW and the Rape of Nanking and just expected something like that. But that stuff was just ferrifying, even in the context of the Second World War it's nightmareish beyond what I expected. What makes it even worse is that the Japanese has pretty much never aknowledged or apologised for any of the things they've done. But look on the bright side, you've seen the worst of humanity, nothing is going to horrify or shock you again.

Note, if anyone reads this and deciedes to provide a link that refutes the above statement about Unit 731 being the worst thing humanity has ever done by provideing an example of people who were even worse. Stop, don't. I really don't want to know. Also if you read this and want to look up Unit 731, don't. You won't like what you find.

Saw Salo, but not with English dubs/subs, so couldn't get immersed in it. So didn't find it that shocking, as was distracted by thinking about how scenes were staged, what the food really was, etc...

Why? Why, in the name of humanity didn't I listen to you?

I thought I had seen it all after the Nazi concentration camps... *sigh*

Totally thought this article would be about Mortal Kombat.

I'm not a huge fan of horror, so I'll pass on all of these.. but get back to me when you do an article on the ones with the most nudity. :D
