Today in class, we were discussing the effects that texting has had on grammar and overall spelling capabilities. We were talking about how the necessity for speed is ruining our ability to communicate with proper word structure. But then the comparison was made to make the Internet to blame as well.

This I feel is untrue. While texting is definitely detrimental to grammar, forum posting is far more concentrated and precise. Our use of grammar on forums allows us to express emotions through our wordings, unlike short form text messages.

What do you think? Do you believe that forum posting is more precise than texting?

My forum postings and texting capabilities are both one in the same. I text just like how I post. I'm also unbelievably good at it. People ask me if I'm really texting anything when I do, because I don't look at my phone while I do it and I actually make coherent messages with proper grammar/punctuation as well. Sometimes, I'm even impressed by it.

So, I believe both are precise...if you're willing to put the effort into it.

The internet is mostly responsible for my use of correct grammar and is also what caused me to learn to type without looking at my fingers. I learned to type through a typing tutor at school, but after a summer of posting on the Escapist, I realized I wasn't looking at my fingers anymore. I try to maintain proper grammar while of forums since I'm not under any real time or character constraints, as opposed to texting where I spend half the time wondering which button g is on.

Well, I simply believe that experience forum goers are far more capable of conveying emotion through their words than texters, because we aren't charged by the letter for each word we write down.

It was a very interesting discussion, because the loss of tone and emotion resulting from short form texting makes it difficult to know what a person is trying to imply.

Smart eyed forum people can be acutely aware of implied body language merely through the word usage.
