my friend does it all the time while I'm in the car, I yell at him not to but he would say "its ok cause i'm a good driver"

Anyone who texts and drives deserves to have their license removed for a year. There's been enough innocent people killed from these morons.
Making distractions for yourself while loosely controling a 1.5 ton brick of metal is a stupid idea.
So yeah, it's common sense not to do it.

I do it at red lights, sometimes I check my phone at stop signs. Since getting a touch screen phone though, I pretty much just wait until I'm wherever I'm going to actually do anything other than read.

I guess there's a reason why it's illegal to use a cellphone while driving in Norway, eh? Seriously though, texting and driving is a seriously dumb idea. Might as well drive blind-folded.
That doesn't work with driving while texting unless the driver happens to hit something bigger than they are, which happened to the girlfriend of someone I know. I felt sorry for the bus driver, he was REALLY distraught over it. (The boyfriend was oddly resigned to it. He figured it was going to happen.)Gaz6231 said:

I don't have a usable texting plan. I will by next month, but not yet, so I have no reason to. Also, it's incredibly stupid. It's one thing to have your brain focusing on something else while you're driving, but having your eyes focus on something else?
I'm taking enough of a risk just changing the radio stations. When my phone goes off, I always try and find a spot to pull over, so that I can take it, if possible. I am also rather strict about that kind of thing. Were I a passenger in a car driven by a text-driver, I would immediately take the phone from their hands. No excuses for that.

You would think it is common sense. But it seems every time I'm riding in a car with someone and looking at the other drivers, more younger people are texting while driving than not. I always fuss at my friends when they do it, usually because they are driving badly (though they'll say they're a pro at it and are driving fine, even while they nearly slammed into the back of the car ahead of us).SnootyEnglishman said:

People who use their cell phones (for text or talk) while driving need to be subject to the same penalty as drunk drivers. Even with a hands-free device, it's been proven time and time again that holding a phone conversation makes an otherwise sober person have impaired reaction times, in many cases worse than if they have five beers in 'em.

Far too many times has some arsechimp nearly forced a disaster because they're driving one-handed with their phones held to their other ear, usually their ear that faces the window meaning they have reduced visibility when they should be aware of people they have to give way to.
