my current computer completely sucks and i can't even run minecraft so i'm probably going to buy a new computer soon. I was looking at a Acer duel-core with just a generic graphics card. Would that be enough to play tf2, css and other such games?

"Generic graphics card" means absolutely nothing.

Do you mean an integrated chipset (one that's built in and not removable)? I'd reconsider if so (I assume you're not getting a laptop), even though the requirements on both games are pretty low.

You should have at least 2GB RAM if you're going to be running Vista or Windows 7 (I think it's the same for 7, at least) also.

TF2 and CSS don't even really need DualCore, but depends on what 'other such games' means and what your budget is. By other games, if you mean era, then yeah, that ought to be more than enough, but as per Woodsey, 'generic graphix card' doesn't say much. If you mean genre, then think of getting a QuadCore (2.5GHz+), 4 GB RAM and GeF 100+ series, should cover most demanding FPS's (and by that I mean CrySis 2). But naturally, it all depends on how much of the green stuff you want to chuck at it.

sorry i don't really know all the details and computer mumbo-jumbo but I'm trying to learn but i don't plan on playing crisis anytime soon. Can you give me brief explanation on graphics cards and their requirements etc. please?

Well, I have a 1.6Ghz Core Duo, 2 Gigs of RAM, Intel gma954 integrated chipset (one of the shitiest card available). It's a 3 and a half years old computer, and I can run TF2 and CSS.
With graphics set to low, some tweaking and sometimes in windowed mode, but damn I can run them.

I would adventure to say that you would need to try hard to find a computer that cannot run those games.

Well, you can start by telling us what graphic card that comes with the computer you're looking at. If it's an "integrated graphics card", then as far as gaming is concerned you're buying a computer with no graphics card in it, and ergo will probably be only good for Minecraft and World of Goo. You *might* be able to squeeze out TF2 with some fiddling and blood sacrifices, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If it's not an integrated graphics card, then compare it to this list. [http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-radeon-hd-6870-geforce-gtx-570,2834-7.html] If it's higher than the GeForce 7600 GT or ATi/AMD HD3670 (or their equivalents), then it'll almost certainly run TF2 on Medium.

Tf2 doesn't run more than 1 core very well (in fact I get so much instability and negligible benefit with dual core I just turn it off.), so the single core speed is most important.

I'd recommend 2.4ghz (at least) for your processor (you could play on lower, but it'd be ugly as sin) 512mb Vram should suffice, as source games are more CPU intensive than anything.

This is all assuming tf2 is the only one you want to play. It'd probably be a better investment if you just get a decent quad core and a gig of Vram or something.

OK, I'll go based on just the games you provided. Though, actually, if you go to (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.262808-For-the-non-PC-gamers-out-there-here-is-a-cheap-gaming-rig-now-with-EXTREME-budget-edition) that's actually quite a cheap and good load out to compare against (don't buy it, though, because if you're anything like me, the actual build will be hashed up and software conflict will be the least of your problems).

CSS: any DualCore processor will run this along with DirectX 9 graphics cards (ones that are 256MB memory) and I won't bother going into RAM (less than 1GB required, so go figure). Because it's quite an old game, most new release mid-range (or even cheap) PC's these days will run them.

And it's pretty much the same story with TF2.

Don't know what the Canadian dollar/GBP rate of exchange is, but GBP500 can get you 4GB RAM, 1TB hard disk space, GeForce 310 video card and a 2GHz QuadCore all of which is more than enough to play a looooooooooooot of games. Hope that helps
