Yeah, I mean I've had amazing Snipers on my team before that made it so the other team could barely get past the spawn. And, I love them for it.

Since everyone seems to be a scout right now I would suggest not to go scout.

Scout rushes are common now cause of the Scout's upgrades. This can only be balanced by releasing upgrades for everyone else.

Or you can not fail at knowing the mechanics and just roast them all with a single pyro like I do.

At OP: Pyro or Medic. Best two choices. Sniping is "eh" mainly because what it usually ends up with is just two snipers shooting at each other, which does not help the team at all.

If you are a noob, and those are your only options, I would go with the sniper. The easiest to use (just point and click), and it will let you have an overview of the map you are playing.

If you preffer not to shut to other options, I would choose soldier, medic or heavy, as they are easiest to understand and use rather effectively and are a bigger help to the team.

Valve have put very little effort into improving TF2.

Say WHAT? They might not have perfected it yet, but Valve have put more effort into improving TF2 in the 18 months since its release than possibly any game ever before that wasn't an MMO, and they're continuing to do so.

Whew. On topic.

Don't pick "a class" to play. That would defeat the point of playing TF2 rather than any other randomly chosen FPS. Try all the classes, learn which is best for which situation, and be prepared to change classes when you're team needs it. That said, Pyro is a great starting point.

Just a footnote to what some people have said here: if you're on a console, the Sniper takes a lot of skill.

I'd say Pyro is the easiest offense class to play. You always cause good damage, you're practically unbeatable in turns or close quarters, and it's easy to hit people with the flamethrower.

And there is no better feeling in the world than when you get behind a Heavy with the Backburner. Those constant "Critical Hit!" sounds are so addicting, and watching the heavy drop after 2 seconds of that feels so rewarding.

Pyro is my favorite class, even though I've been playing for a while. I say that because some gamers automatically think "Pyro = Noob". That's REALLY not the case.

You kill him and then move on to the next target... what seems to be the issue? There is no difference between theory and practice with the sniper.

And, even if all you are doing is killing snipers you're protecting your medic... which is also another job of the sniper.

Mainly, the issue people have with the sniper is they don't understand the impact it has on a battle. If I'm killing every person that comes out of a certain area, then I'm doing my job. If I kill the enemy sniper, I did my job. If I took out the enemy medic, I did my job. If I took out the enemy heavy, I did my job.

If I do any killing at all from a distance where nobody but the enemy takes damage, I did my job.

This is what the sniper does. Expecting him to do things he is not equipped to do is outrageous. Of course, this is coming from a guy who regularly gets called an aimbotter. Sniper is my bag. As a result, I get things done.

I would highly suggest rethinking exactly what the role of the sniper is before commenting again, or getting better at aim.

Sniper battles take no longer than two shots at most. If the first shot misses, the next hits. That's all there is to it. Any sniper who can not do that should not be playing the class.

However, even if a sniper battle lasts ages, a sniper is still doing his job by causing a distraction, even if it is small. He is protecting his medic by taking the focus of the other sniper off of his medic and on to him.

There's more to the class than just aiming, much like there's more to the spy than just backstabbing.

Spy is the hardest, then scout.. So i would recommend start as sniper, that is the one easiest of these selections..

Personally i would recommend pyro, demoman or soldier to start off with if you are completely fresh..

EDIT: To help your team mates the most when a noob, choose medic.. Can almost never get enough medics.. And people will love you for it..

This. The BEST class to play when you get better is spy though, because while it's hard, if you get good at it you can decimate the enemy team. Well-coordinated teams of spies can destroy enemy nests with frightening efficiency.

You're both right: the point is to not be a "weighted companion cube sniper".
If you snipe, don't sit in one point and just camp the crap out of the enemy: because you only encourage the entire enemy team to go sniper.
Be a battle sniper: one who advances with the team.

The pyro is mocked for being a simple class, but they are incredibly versatile. Pyros are anti-soldier/CQC ambush units. In a pinch they can also be anti-sniper, due to good flare gun placement disrupting their aim with burn damage. Not to mention they scatter the enemy quickly, so if someone backs them up they can divide and conquer mobs of foes.
Spies require a smidge of luck, nothing more. The rest is all skill.

This, but with all 9. I've only recently realized how to play the demoman: he is not a frontline man, meant only to come forth to decimate sentry nests and camping fools.

hmm when is started i avoided heavy and soldier as i didnt like the idea of a good player medic relying on me when i was ubercharged but maybe thats just me

pyro is a good starting point tho and u can savour the moments where u catch many people by surrpise or taunt a heavy with the flaregun

The Pyro is the easiest of the classes. Point at what you want dead, then press fire. The burn damage usually kills most classes regardless of health. Due to this, I hate the Pyro.
The Soldier is quite easy to get the hang of as well.

I found the Heavy hard to control; he's just too slow and an obvious target. When I played as the Heavy, I instantly became a bullet magnet.

The Spy, out of those mentioned in the OP, is the one that's hardest to get the hang of, but is arguably the most rewarding and damaging. There's nothing more helpful than a decent Spy on your team. Just got to watch out for paranoid enemy team players who shoot anyone, just to make sure they aren't a Spy.

But my choice is the Sniper, but that's because I love sniping. So that's slightly biased.

All of these classes are easy to understand, but actually being competent with them is the hard part. Are you accurate with a mouse? Try a little bit of sniping. Not very good at any other class? Try Pyro.

Am I the only one who likes playing as an engineer? I love building up the turret and defending the flag or base. I am a bit of a noob at TF2 as well and I think the engineer is the way to go.
