I don't know what everyone expected when they tuned into the Hideo Kojima Variety Show....So apparently some folks are a bit miffed award winners barely got any time, while other got to blabber on for like 5 minutes (Kojima, Anthony Mackie)
Will there be a great Rebirth and cause a rebirth of action RPGs of a different flavor? I gotsta to know...Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is going to be amazing.
This comparison made me try to think of why it is that Kojima is so much more tolerable than Cage. Maybe it's because Kojima is willing to take the piss out of his own work while Cage takes himself too seriously.I like Geoff championing the industry but it seems there’s always hiccups on these shows. Whether security issues or just ignoring important details, events, etc. Maybe he could use an event planner if he hasn’t already had one, or a better one if he actually has.
As an aside, I also like Kojima and all he’s contributed, but this latest game reveal was weak. Glad Xbox will have a (probably) timed exclusive, or wait no it’ll be on PC too right? Anyways it literally just reminded me of something David Cage would’ve done, which is probably more disturbing than the game’s premise itself. Just a puff piece courtesy of his best bud Geoff to show his clout working with someone like Peele, inching ever closer to his dream of merging games with film.
Yeah I mean don’t get me wrong, I’ll play something from Kojima any day of the week before a Cage joint, and he’s possibly his own worst critic which drives his craft, but it increasingly seems his love of movies is taking center stage. This comparison made me try to think of why it is that Kojima is so much more tolerable than Cage. SwitchWhat's this "Dave the Dredge" blurb about, coming December 15?
Finished Cocoon yesterday and it certainly was a ride. Gave me a lot of Myst vibes with the world hopping and the general atmosphere. A very good game.Well I already complained about the ads time and Kojima time ratios in another thread so just a couple of things I remember:
- The game that Abubakir Salim (Bayek from Assassin's Creed Origins and co-star of Raised By Wolves) was the standout upcoming game for me- a 2(.5?)d action platformer with an African or Afro-futuristic setting.
- Hellblade 2 is gonna be butt. The long-awaited finally gameplay trailer still didn't actually have gameplay. As with the first game, it will be praised for its themes and performance and vibe but will be absolute torture to play for those of us who actually like the playing of the video games.
- Wu Kong is gonna be butt, but I'll be in the minority because that is how it is with Ninja Theory. Everybody else will enjoy playing a wanna-be-Sekiro where every movement is awkward angles and stiff reactions and call it great combat, while I'll be in my corner replaying Coccon.
Oh, yeah, Cocoon won something. I can't believe "best debut indy" was the category I found myself actually hoping for a specific outcome but this game really hit me hard and I do believe it is a model for game design that other devs should learn some things from.
The VIP of the night was Timothy Chalamet. After Mathew McConohay (I'm not looking up his spelling) did his whole insufferable McConohaylookathowcoolIam schtick and Anthony Makie tried desperately to recreate Keanu Reeve's beloved onstage moment promoting Cyberpunk but came off like a desperate nerd, Timmy Chals just said the thing and stfu. That.. that is real cool.
Runner up VIP was the band that did the Hellblade song. I know, I'm coming back to Hallblade because this whole game series is pissing me off. Its promotion is cool, its actors are charming, the music is awesome, everything about it great. Except the actual game. We shit on game promotions that don't show gameplay but give this game a pass because it deals with good themes and all that. I like good themes! But Hellblade has become insufferable.
Serious question. So you all actually watched this? Like whole thing? Why? What do you get out of it?Other than Kojima, I also hated Anthony Mackie taking up so much time. His "jokes" weren't even funny. Like, wtf are you talking about?
Yes these events have issues and the big news usually gets covered within a new hours (or few minutes), but I like watching it because it has to do with gaming. Hell, I used to sit through just about every E3 shows before it turned to shit, and SGF has been a great replacement. And while these moments usually feel forever to go through, they are actually rather short compared to everything else that I enjoy.Serious question. So you all actually watched this? Not criticizing I just don't watch award shows. It just seems like whatever interesting news youd get out if this will be on front page tomorrow and its not like the Whitehouse correspondence dinner where you get like actual comedians telling jokes. At least from that video it all seemed pretty cringe.
So you like the spectacle and “show” part of it too. Because that’s what it seems the bulk of it is. Advertising, presentation speeches, acceptance speeches, introductions, performances, etc. Only a fraction of the runtime is devoted to showing new videogame footage.Yes these events have issues and the big news usually gets covered within a new hours (or few minutes), but I like watching it because it has to do with gaming. Plus, because I am subscribed to different gaming media outlets, I hate seeming many feeds being shoved to my face cover the same material; I'd rather see them through once and be done with it.
Fair enough, but I guess what those fluffs are dedicated to is what makes me like or dislike them, and how much I care about the game it's supposed to be related to. For example, the ff7 rebirth music number, the old gods of asgard performance, and the goty 2023 nominee were all great imo. Contrary to my disdain for performances that I remember from E3, such as Madden band performance or Just Dance group dance performance. So you like the spectacle and “show” part of it too.
