That "first play" feel

I remember both Metroid Prime and Pikmin had the awesome feeling of exploration when playing for the first time. Every time I unlocked a new area, I was anxious to see what kind of new creatures I would find.

The first time I played Syphon Filter. The Playstation was the first console that I owned myself, and Syphon Filter was my first game that I owned, and it remains to this day my favorite game of all time. Rip off the plastic, smell that sweet, new game scent, pop that SOB in, and damn... I don't think I left my room that entire week.

The beginning of God Hand was a masterpiece, because it does everything it can in the first five minutes to look like a shitty game: the intro cut scene is about thirty seconds long, the environments all look dull and gray, and the enemies all look generic. But then you actually start playing the game, and the next thing you know you're spin-kicking people so hard that they fly off-screen and you feel like manliness incarnate.

I hate that "New to game" feel. When I start a new MMO, or a new FPS or RTS or really anything... if I don't know exactly how everything works I get frustrated.

Everytime a button is not where I think it should be, or every time I make a mistake that I know is noobish I get frustrated. Its that feeling of frustration that pushes me to learn every little detail and nuance of a game.

I love that feeling! I've had it with Oblivion, WoW, Doom 3, Bioshock, Half-Life Series & Portal. I can't ever really say it's been there for any other game.

Maybe Daggerfall.

Morrowind was a let down, but it started to have that amazing new game feeling. Took about 5 minutes for the New Game feeling to wear off because I more or less skipped by the first town and went into that first cave and died like 7 times. I had to restart the game (twice) because I never saved right away.

It was the first time I wished that in single player games you resurrected with like half of your money after dying like in Dragon Warrior and you would have the "option" of reloading a saved game. Forgetting to save for a long time and dying really shits on your game play fun factor.

World of Warcraft. It's hard to describe what that game was like when I first played it.. it was like a marvelous thing

but that shine didn't last, and no matter how much I wanted it to, it never returned.

everything seems good on first play. best examples i can think of are Lair, (that game is a shit taco but the first play was orgasmic) and Prototype (i'm one of the few people who did not get why that game was entertaining but the first play was awesome cos the free running was awesome when it was fresh).

You obviously haven't played sun age. Go play that, and tell me that all games are good on the first play. It really wasn't. Also, Divinity II was more confusing than good on the first try.
