When I legitimately realised that a year was a short amount of time.

Not that I feel old or anything. Older, perhaps, but I'm sure there's still a great deal of shit to shovel before my life is through.

Ah well, back to the midden heap...

I realised I had no new age to look forward to. I'm old enough to drink and that's the last thing of freedom I am afforded.
Also, when I realised that knowing the connection between these two objects is not common knowledge.

Oh I know I know! Oh god I'm old :(
God...damn...it. I know too, the actual oldness is physically hurting now...

The moment hit when I had this night out with a bunch of friends, the tipping point hit (You all know it, it's that point wether you either go home or get fucked up till the sun comes up). My friends asked if I wanted another drink and I said "Nope, because the way you are drinking means you're counting on me to drive us safely to the highschool reunion tomorrow" Uttering that sentence mixed in with the wisdom of actually fucking off made me realise that I suddenly showed responsibility at age 25.

The day my iPod ran out of charge in the car (I have one of those headphone-jack-to-cassette adaptors for my car stereo), had to listen to the radio for the first time in years, and realised that modern music is terrible.

Seriously, I like certain auto-tuned songs (I can even stomach Ke$ha, at least a certain remixed version) but the kind of crap that is sent out over the airwaves today just makes me long for the msuic of my youth (and before I was born).

Just the other week, I was reading on the couch while my girlfriend was watching X-Factor or something similar. I looked up at the tv, saw some prancing teenager mangling a pop song and muttered something along the lines of 'that kid needs to get a haircut, a good stint in the army is what his generation needs'. My girlfriend has taken to nicknaming me granddad ever since. I quite like the name actually.

I definitely remember having rewound a cassette with a pencil... and yet I can't imagine why in God's name you would want to do that, apart from boredom when you could just press rewind surely? >_>

I was coming home from a day at the university and I saw these 3 kids in grade 9 so about 14 years old talking about how they had so much work to do because they had a test on equations of the line and a 1 page essay in the same week. After hearing that I couldn't help but realize that kids these days don't know what having real work is.
Could just be you get more work as school/education progresses.

Yeah, I feel a bit old when I am around my two smaller cousins. They really look up to me and call me when they need help with something but one day I showed them my old NES games because I knew they have never seen one before, and what did they say?

"What? Seriously, what the hell is this?"
"What awful graphics, only 2 buttons, I can't believe you played this shit."
"This is not fun, this is just boring."

Although I expected this reaction I was a bit stumped and old. :p Kids nowadays.
In fairness though, it's easy to look back at some things in gaming with a modern perspective and realize that some things were ****ing absurd.

Like the Atari 2600 joystick. It is terrible. Just terrible. The stick is too stiff and the button barely even goes down IIRC. Mind you, it's been many many years since I played my 2600...

Also, the entire CONCEPT of using a JOYSTICK for games even into the early/mid 90s. People who used Amigas/Atari STs etc. will know what I mean.
What was the point? Maybe it's just being using to joypads for most of my life at this stage, but to imagine playing games like SWIV or even platforms that require some timing and reflexes with a Zip Stick is crazy. Joypads had already been well established by the NES at least so I don't know why sticks seemed to be so popular then.

Also, why the Amiga seemed to only ever have 1 fire button. Despite using the same controller ports as the Mega Drive, so it wasn't some kind of hardware limitation, it just seems that 1 button controllers must have been the focus for God knows what reason, even to the point of ruining Street Fighter II when they blatantly could have allowed 6 button pads. /rant.

Floppy disks were an annoying whore too. Sure, it was fine to have 2, but once it became 3 or 4 or more and you were switching disks every time you did anything it was a nightmare, even today on an emulator.

Anyway we were talking about stuff I do and I use the phrase "surf the net". He was baffle at that phrase and I said it's a phrase use to say you use the internet and that "what how people say it". He just reply back "who are these people you're referring to?". His comment make me think of which people who use that phrase but I keep getting blank realising that no one use that phrase anymore...

You pass an older man in the street, and instead of avoiding eye contact, he says good morning to you..

Another cousin of mine saw my VCR sitting in my room, and asked me what the hell it was. I told him, and he asked me if I ever used it. I told him I did, on occasion. He asked me what kind of movies I still had on tape cassette, and I stopped myself before saying "Well, porn, for one," then realized that I didn't have to stop myself, because this young whippersnapper who had no idea what a VCR was actually 18
How can somebody not have used VHS tapes and be 18?... *Thinks* 2011 - 18 = 1993 if it happened this year. DVDs weren't exactly ubiquitous until some time in the early 2000s...

Did he live in a box until he was 10? :O

When I heard some kid refer to Queen and Areosmith as, "that old, forgotten band from the 90's". That was an eye opener for me and I was born in 1993.
Did you smack him? Queen is not from the 90s.

OT: My old moment was teaching my niece and nephew about Super Mario. They were absolutely fascinated with the game, not because it was "fun", but because anyone could call that rude collection of pixels a "game."

Probably when I stopped hating everything that was different to me.
When meaningless sex didn't really do anything for me anymore.
When making people feel good about themselves was better than only caring about myself.
And when I became tolerant and understanding.

But then again we never stop growing so in two years I might think, "man I was such an idiot back then, NOW I know I'm an adult because..."

I am 17. Yesterday I laughed at "cum laude" because it sounds like "Cum Lord".

I am not old.

I work with a lot of 19 to 20 year olds. Almost on a daily basis, something from the time around 1994 - 1996 comes up and those people say something like: "I was born that year" and I think to myself "Holy Crap, I was a teenager that year". Also, I work alot with kids that are born around 1998 - 2000. Always when I read their date of birth I think: Wow, I remember the Y2K Panic and being at work when 9/11 happened and those kids where just infants. I am 28 now.

I realised that I'm GETTING old, not necessarily am, when I noticed that I'm getting more interested in politics and am worried about when to have kids.

God, next thing I know, I'll start saying that modern music sounds like shit.

Questioning whether or not I had the right to still ocassionaly enjoy old reruns of Tom and Jerry, I returned home and settled in for a quiet evening of alcohlism, WoW and checking facebook during mana breaks. It was there I realised just how many friends I have (mostly within a year or two of my own age at least) complaining about how annoying their parents were. I gazed around my delightfully empty living room, strewn with takeaway wrappers, dvds, half painted Warhammer models and my pet tortoise, and realised that, holy crapsticks, here I am 400 miles away from my family, supported entirely on my own income and with nobody telling me to get a reasonable amount of sleep or clean my room.

I. Am. Old.
This was only the beginning for me. The real realization comes when you hit 30-ish and start thinking: "Man, I better start putting away money if I want to ever retire! Saving time is running out!". Then you start wondering about RRSP's and what the hell they even are, etc.

It gets worse, trust me.

1. Waking up and feeling every major injury I've had in my life flaring up as small yet increasing pain centers, which comes to the realization that my body is falling apart.

2. I used to be able to run places without getting winded, and feeling like a million bucks afterward. Now running leaves me breathless and my body is aflame.

3. Realizing that I have played almost every version of Ultima when it was contemporary.

4. Owning an NES from almost day 1 release.

5. Telling younger generations how cheap things were "back in my day" like gas, beer, etc.

6. Feeling like it was 100% easier to get a job when I was 20, people didn't do background checks, rarely cared about references and almost never called your last employer.

Also, thinking about retirement and life insurance policies.

-The first time I went to bed without masturbating and waking up and realizing it's been three days since I did.

-When I tried to strike up a conversation about the new pokemon game. (Silver just came out).
--Urgh, realizing there's a Pokemon silver just now and probably no kid played that version.

-This guy asked me something on the street and called me "sir" for the first time.

-A woman screaming for help and my first reaction wasn't to stop or run away but run towards to help her.

-Out living three dogs.

Heh kind of. I had a ten year marriage, my wife died, I'm the sole parent of a 2 year old child and I've been through bankruptcy and out the other side. Despite all that I *still* don't think I am getting old. Despite the fact that my girlfriend is about to hit 40 this month.
