I wasn't too keen on the games, and those ads for the movie they have running all over the site look god awful. I think the ads said they come out to day? Anyone pick it up?

Discuss.

Videogame movie, without knowing anything about it, it's going to be bad.

Edit: Pfffahahaha, just saw some pictures of their costumes.

Yeah, it's been proven many times over that you can't make a movie out of a videogame. Street Fighter, Prince of Persia, that eye-bleach Mario movie, and now this.

I watched it, it was the greatest cinematic experience since I watched Citizen Kane back in '41.

I'm sure one day there will be a brilliant gem of a movie based on a video game, but that day could be a very long way off, and probably very loosely based on it's namesake..

Half the problem seems to be dodgy directors (HELLO, MR BOLL) and the other half is translation, one just doesnt turn into the other very easily.

The hell it is not. That's the problem with most Video Game Movies, they completely ignore everything about that the game that we loved, whether it's the setting, story or characters.

At least that FF7 "fanservice" gave us the great characters we love back, good(extremely, rather) action scenes even if the story was a bit on the 'meh' side.

Advent Children was just as god awful as all the other movies I listed.

Was it really that good? It didn't look like it.

Depends. I'm waiting for a copy to turn up at Half-Price books before I say anything about it.

Advent Children fucking sucked. I wish it was a fanservice movie, then I might have enjoyed it. As a fan it was a huge disappointment. None of my favorite characters got any screentime. Hell, Cloud and Tifa are the only playable characters that get any spotlight. Vincent gets a few scenes (odd choice), but everyone else is relegated to a cameo. And the movie explains absolutely nothing. The movie never tells you anything about what the beloved characters have been up to in the two years since the game ended. Instead, we get a barely coherent plot about some plague, and some kidnapped orphan no one cares about. Truly awful.

The action scenes were alright though.

This may sound strange, but the fact that the movie had a 'meh' story is kind of a good thing in my eyes.

It wasn't a movie about FF VII (damn thing would have to be at least 20 hours long), it was a movie that served as a sequel to FF VII.

Now, how would the fanbase have reacted if it DID have an epic story with deep meaning and tons of twist? Well, it would most likely have to fuck around with elements from the original game - like so many game-to-movie projects unsuccessfully do. They played it safe, and I don't blame them for that.

I don't disagree with anything you said. I loved FF7:AC for what it was, rather than what it could have been.

I have no high hopes for this movie, but Tekken is pretty rich storywise for a fighting game, so at least they have something to work with.

This looks much better, but I'm still skeptical.

I thought Silent Hill did a very good job of bringing the atmosphere of the town to the screen, and their dark world looked much better than the games which, I think, is the point.
On the other end of the quality spectrum; the Dead Or Alive movie sucked just as much as the Tekken movie appears to, but I have to say, that the start of the Leon vs Kasumi scene was a sweet number with him shirking off her blows and tossing her around.

And my two cents on the Advent children debate: "I'm gonna bash an absurdly popular movie so I can sound like I have insight that's beyond the unwashed masses and show how much cooler I am." Which is the soul of 90% of all forum debates.
