ok...so I read this article again
http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-6-most-ominous-trends-in-video-games/

and it pissed me off...again, (theres somthing about David wong that really rubs me the wrong way)

but anyway thats not exactally my focus. With this year over many would say it was a GREAT year for games, and I would be inclined to agree. Of coarse there are always those "problems" with the industry outlined in that article

anyway those trends were still obvious this year...two of the biggest sellers were military "online-focused" FPS. We still have DRM and lots and lots of seaquels, and "dumbing down"

while I think alot of people exagerate thease issues (seriously next person who complains about brown shooters is going to get...an angry rant from me) theres no denying theres some truth there (but seriously, there are LOTS of great games that arnt brown shooters)

so anway discussion Value: how do you think the next year is looking? and what about games in general? what do you think are the biggest problems the industry has, and is it going to get better/worse? [/B]

Personally my main issues are
-DLC abuse
-online DRM and online in general
-dumbing down (as much as I hate to say it)

and mabye you cant tell but this might just be me ranting about that article...*grumble*fuckingdavidwong*grumble*

2012? Only game I'm looking forward to is Aliens:Colonial Marines and I have a bad-record of not properly enjoying games I buy near release date. Damn you Dawn of War 2/Starcraft 2/Space Marine! I hope this one breaks the streak, I've been looking forward to this game for quite a bit. Not that AVP2 can't satisfy my need for playing as 'the ultimate badass!'

I can't really comment on the industries' problems since the only 'problem' I've encountered is an Online Pass for SM and I bought the game.

Here's a list (compiled with help from Wikipedia) of a few high-profile games with a set-in-stone release date for next year:
-Silent Hill HD Collection: no Silent Hill 1 and updated voice acting which might or might not change the game considerably...it's a HD remake, though, and we'll probably be seeing a lot more.
-The Darkness 2: it's a sequel. If you liked the original, you'll probably like this one. As for me, I couldn't care less about either game.
-Syndicate: Command and Conquer: Renegade was reviled by the fans. XCOM is already being reviled and it doesn't even have a release date yet. If it wasn't for the sudden banning in Australia, I'm sure Syndicate would catch a lot more hatred (although it still will catch some.)
-Mass Effect 3: Action Mode and Story Mode are annoying quite a few people who've apparently forgotten that there's also a mode for "Mass Effect 3 as it was meant to be played." As for the game itself, if Mass Effect 2 really was 'dumbed down' and judging by Bioware's current standard, I doubt it'll go back up.
-Xenoblade Chronicles in America: Since it's a limited run, it'll probably get picked up by a few people, but I doubt all the Rainfall guys really want it. Still, it should get at least as much acclaim as it did in the other regions. And if we're lucky, then Pandora's Tower and The Last Story might even have a chance outside Japan.

Now for a few games we know are coming in 2012, but not exactly when:
-Aliens Colonial Marines: It's been being hyped up for 10 years, and you can ask Gearbox (Duke Nukem Forever) and Ion Storm Dallas (Daikatana) how that usually works out.
-Bioshock Infinite: Will be seen as an improvement over Bioshock 2 (a study into why you don't add multiplayer to a sequel to a single-player-focused game) but still not as good as the first one. Unlikely to be remembered as a classic.
-Counter-Strike Global Offensive: Like Mass Effect 3's "Action Mode", Global Offensive's "Casual Mode" will be decried by some hardcore fans as Valve betraying their fanbase...by expanding it. Like with Mass Effect 3, everyone else will be too busy having fun with the game to care.
-Halo 4: The multiplayer will catch flak for not having a lot of stuff from Reach, like armour abilities. The single-player will catch flak for just not being very good. This won't stop Microsoft and 343 from finishing the trilogy, though.
-The Last Guardian: Held up by everyone who plays it (not very many) as being the next Shadow of the Colossus.
-Max Payne 3: Failed to learn from Bioshock 2 and Dead Space 2, and will suffer for it. As well as the change in location and addition of a coffee filter over the screen.
-Metro Last Light: Fixes the problems in Metro 2033 and becomes a classic. Unfortunately, though, it's not bought by many people, most of whom were turned off by 2033 or just weren't interested in the first place.
-Starcraft 2 Episode 2: Too little, too late. People continue to decry Blizzard's merger with Activision and acceptance of their business policies. Still no function to play the game via LAN, which keeps it from being accepted in South Korean pro-gaming circles even longer.
-As for Treyarch's new Call of Duty, people finally realise how milked the series has become and Call of Duty goes Guitar Hero's way.

If anyone wants to debate my predictions, quote me, remove all of them except the ones you want to debate and debate away. And for the record, I'm only getting one game all year next year and most likely it'll be Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, unless Bioshock Infinite gets an MA15+ rating from our outdated, idiotic ratings board.

I personally think that COD will survive, but that the Modern Warfare setting will become old and cliched even by the standards of the average player, much like what happened to WW2. I expect either that WW2 will become the trendy setting again or some new setting will be the new darling of the FPS. Either way COD has too much money behind it to die quite so easily...

Could be wrong, though.

Next year...
So about 360 days left until the world ceases to excist.
And if we somehow manage to survive doomsday the next step after that is 2050 and lightsabers.

With Bioshock infinite, Prototype 2 and Mass Effect 3 the future looks bright to me.

Grand Knights History, Dragon's Crown, two Persona 4 games, Gungnir, ME3.....it is looking really good.
As for worrisome trends: DRM and the attack on the used market. Just stop it already.

I hope the new consoles can finally be fucking announced/released so games take a huge leap as the lowest common denominator is no longer 6 year old hardware.
I agree, not because I want to buy a new console, heeeeeelll no; I want a new console generation so I can live it up playing all the games I missed from the last console generation for pennies on the dollar, while everyone else cries and moans about the PS4 and the Xbox 720's high price points and lackluster launch lineups.

Bad article is bad. It's not entirely wrong, but his points are obvious and his style is really long winded.

DLC is only going to get worse. With Volition talking about '40 weeks of DLC' for Saints Row the Third it's clear that more and more content is going to be set aside during development to be sold as DLC later on.

My main interest for 2012 will be directed towards MMOs though, particularly watching what happens with two games I either don't or rarely play - The Old Republic and World of Pandacraft Warcraft. The reaction to the announcement of WoW's next expansion has been distinctly mixed, and TOR will never ever have a better chance to challenge the 800lb gorilla than 2012 because for once Blizzard seem to have taken a mistep.

Personally I still doubt that TOR will come close to WoW numbers, and to be honest I hope they don't, because Bioware have said repeatedly that the only way to succeed with an MMO is to copy WoW, and I would hate them to be proven right, because it would kill any spirit of risk taking or innovation in high profile MMOs for years to come.

At least until Blizzard releases 'Titan' in 2014 or whenever.

But there are still games I'm looking forward to in 2012, like Mass Effect 3 and perhaps The Secret World. Oh and Doom 4. Now that Rage is out of the way I really want to hear about Doom 4.

COD is already dying. A behemoth takes a long time to hit the ground because hes so far up, but hes falling none the less.

Elite pretty much failed, MW3 is the least played COD since COD 4 in terms of online (despite selling more copies than Black Ops), even the youtube community is shrinking. I doubt the next COD game will set any new records, and thats pretty much the standard for COD games now.

Of course, this doesnt mean COD will disappear or anything.
Hrm. I get what you mean. Probably end up like Halo did, still alive but in the back somewhere.
