I don't really use "gay" that much out of its context like I used to. Though, I need to work on not saying that something/someone is "retarded" so much.

The problem with the use of "gay" as a swear word is that I've heard people use synonyms as a substitute for "gay" as a swear. Example, I've heard people say "That's homosexual" before, in a half joking manner. The point is, it's not that it's replacing "stupid" in meaning, it's that a large number of people thought that gay people were stupid, and it caught on.

It doesn't matter if there's malice behind it or not, because people don't know what you mean. They know what you say, and if what you're saying is derogatory towards homosexuals then they'll think that's what you are. If you don't like that, then stop presenting yourself that way.

I find that a sarcastic, Hurray, or Huzzah works well. After it happens several times it escalates to dammit, than to shit, than to fuck, than to a large string of incoherent psychobabble.
If I still haven't stopped getting pissed at whatever was ticking me off in the first place, than I end up going: "great, now I need a new headset", since if I get pissed off too much I tend to throw things. usually my phone, or my headset, depending on what pissed me off.

"Andraste's [insert anatomy here]" is nice and versatile as well, though I don't think I'll pick it up. I'd rather a Kingkiller reference in Tehlu than the Dragon Age one if I go down that road.

Actually I use the word literally, when I say, "That sure is gay", when something shitty happens, I am actually saying, "That sure is happy" with a sarcastic inflection.
Fuckbutter, "I've lost my keys... oh wait, they're in my pocket. Fuckbutter!" not quite a Smart-sounding substitute, but slightly clever and better than "that's gay".

I'm not feeling sorry for any whiny smokers tonight. I smoke, but do so at such a spotty rate that I can list myself as a nonsmoker on any medical records, same for drinking. Willpower is what it takes to not get addicted to smoking. You're not guaranteed to become addicted to it, and I definitely wouldn't believe all the self help hokum about how hard stopping smoking is. They'd tell you whatever you want to hear to make ya feel good about buying their patches and such so you can ease off your 'addiction'.thylasos said:Yes. Edit: As for the relationship between habits and 'addictions', again its just something you get used to doing - people have a natural tendency to fall into routines and get comfortable with them, and then reject change. Just takes a little extra thought if you want to stop doing something, and some time.

I'd like to see a poll using percentages of everyone who uses "gay" as a pejorative who actually MEANS "oh homosexual individual!" Anyway, if you have a problem, talk to Matt Parker, Trey Stone and the constantly-changing English language.
You know, if The Escapist wants to say stuff like, "house rules: don't use those as pejoratives on this site" that's cool. But when people start, like, pushing their agendas and trying to socially engineer little pod people to say what they want to hear how they want to hear it, I'm not down with that. Not saying you are one of those individuals, however.
So I won't say it here if I'm told not to, whatever. But if I feel like saying "that's gay" as a way of talking about some dumb thing that happens, I will. And if somebody wants to say, "that's so lower-middle-class-white-college-boy," that's cool too.

Not only does it make what you are saying clear, it doesnt make bad associations. If X = Y and Y = Z, then Z = X. I used to say "That's gay" But now I'm more set on "...For Terra's sake..." or for extreme anger "Damn it **** Mashers..." The Gay subject even now is seen as a taboo (Lesser as it might be) and just shouting profanity in times of anger or distress seems to be a natural reaction so I assume the two are connected.
I've trained myself to replace gay with gash. Sounds better in a scottish accent.

Also, where I'm from, we tend to use gimp as a noun, but the reaction it's gotten on some forums makes me think it means something different everywhere else.

It's the little bit of poo that hangs on after the main bulk of poo falls out your bum. So If I say, for example, BlOps totally gimped the sniper rifle, they made it needlessly worse which gives a feeling of annoyance to discovering your not clear to pull your pants up just yet, and osmehow have to grapple wit this gimp.
