Well I usually do a good job of refraining from using "gay" in those sort of situations.

However, and I mostly blame the environment that is Team Fortress 2 at 5AM at night, I have thrown around "fag" as a joke sometimes. I really shouldn't.

Can't say that I've ever used the term in such a fashion. I don't even use it to describe homosexuals. My aunt's name is Gay.

My curses are all over the board, though. Aside from the usual American staples regarding sexual intercourse, sexual organs or fecal matter, I'll also use some things I read in books during my formative years... which are usually derived from colorful UK slang. One of my all time favorites being "Sheep swallop! Sheep swallop and bloody buttered onions!"

When my computer froze yesterday I hit it and told it to stop taking it up the butt, I'm a bad person. But I call my boyfriend a hetero and all my straight friends homo's so I think I should just not be allowed out in public anymore.

Rarely say that anymore, because most of the time it has nothing to do with people who are gay. Unless we're talking about my cousin because he's VERY Gay and happily so. Right on man.

One thing I'm trying to sub out actually is God, because I don't believe in that stuff so I'd rather just remove it from my vocabulary entirely.

I don't like the word in the context of some abstract expression of "meh", and I never have. No one can convince me it's just a random word that has no homophobic connotations. Most people that I've known that have used it do so because they don't like gay people.

It's one of those perjorative words that just won't go away. It was around in the 90s, and it's still here now.

Words don't matter, meaning and context do.
If you're not a homophobe then you're not a homophobe, so it doesn't matter.
Words always matter. Your person feelings on gay people don't matter, if you're saying "that's gay", you're not only associating being gay with whatever the bad thing you're describing it as, you're also saying to everyone else that it's ok to describe this group of people negatively, and that it's ok to use language like that.
If that was true, every black person who uses the N-word is racist...
Oh we are, we truly are.

That the one thing I never understood about my Race, what the point of banning racism if you are so casual at usng or allowing racism on other races?

No one yet have gave me a answer.

I've been really good about calling something gay only if it is actually homosexual.

I've just been saying that sucks.

I like your point about the word "God". I use it as well, and usage of it somehow affirms the existence of the thing that you refer to. In that way, and that way only, I'd rather use the word "gay" than the word "God".

The best way to get "that's gay" out of your system is to spend time somewhere where saying it seriously is unacceptable. Same goes for the use of "retarded".

For me, this was my high school. Now it could be the fact that my uncle is openly gay, so it would be awkward for me to be saying "that's gay" around him.

I just use the typical assortment of reactive words.

That, and whenever someone near me says,
"That's [so] gay."
I just respond,
"You know what's really gay? Homosexuals."

Only to people I know well though, I get the feeling it could come across too obnoxious otherwise.

If that was true, every black person who uses the N-word is racist...

Without wishing to sound patronizing to them, I'm a lot better spoken than most of my friends, and I hear them using language like that all the time. However, it doesn't bother me because their language is just an insight into how they've been brought up, and I know that underneath it all none of them are actually homophobic. For one thing, I'm bi, and I've never had any abuse from them (beyond occasional jokes, but the key word there being 'jokes')
When the N-word is used it's only used in two instances: When someone is being honestly racist or when someone who is black uses it for whatever (generally) positive reason.

If gay was simply used as an insulting name for a man who has sex with another man (like queer or fag), this would be a valid point. But when the word is taken to mean anything bad at all, it's a whole different ballpark. People aren't using gay just to insult people. They're using it as a substitute for the word 'bad'. Taking a label (that's generally positive or just neutral) for a substantial amount of people and turning it into something that means bad, forces the new connotation on to the group of people (as they share that label).
It's pointlessly insensitive. Just as if Asian suddenly became the term for bad. "That's Asian!"

English is not my native language so I've never had this problem. :D On the other hand, since I'm gay myself it would be kinda cool to see people's reactions if I would use it as a curse word... :p
"That's gay!"

"How would you like it if someone called you gay."

"Oh, I'm gay so I can say it like that."
Exactly! I love a bit of hypocrisy once in a while.

I used to use "that's gay" but I stopped because the things I was describing as "gay" were most definitely not. Me losing at a video game is most likely not having sex with another man.
Also using it describe something that I don't like gives the impression that I'm against homosexuality which is not true.

Anyway OT: I use "that's lame" and "that sucks". Also "go fuck yourself" which sounds a harsher in text than when I say it out loud.

I know a lesbian who often uses gay as an insult to other people, and calling annoying things gay. While it really bothers me, I think she thinks she's being ironic or something.

I just say Damn.

Drop the groceries. "Damn"

Forget to unpack the entire grocery cart leaving some in the parking lot of the store I just left and not noticing until I get home. "God Fucking Dammit!"

Don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but there was an episode of South Park where the word 'fag' is used to describe obnoxious Harley riders. Words constantly change meanings and have a variety of connotations, I've used words like 'gay', 'fag', 'fuck' and 'shit' in completely innocuous and arbritrary contexts that have no resemblence to their original meaning and indeed don't really make sense in the way they're used, its just something to yell out in anger directed at no one in particulat. I don't think that being bisexual gives me any leeway with the term, but it should be pretty obvious to most people when it is and isn't being used in a derogatory manner.
