Never liked "that's gay",so I never use it. It's as bad as "that's retarded."

Phone scenario: "...Rackem frackem."
Keys scenario: "...Now I feel really really stupid."
Vending Machine: "...D8< AARRRGHABIBLE! GIMME MY FREAKING GUMMI WORMS!!"

I for one, don't use 'thats gay' but I understand that people don't actually mean 'gay' as in 'homosexual.' Same way as when I say 'thats retarded' I'm not comparing whatever that is to a mentally challenged person. Plus, aren't homosexuals offended if you call them gay? Aren't people offended when you call a mentally challenged person a 'retard?' Same way if you call a black man the N word. (Just to clarify, I don't use that word. But stick with me, I have a point coming.) Since people don't want to be called these words, how about if we stop calling them that and use them to describe crazy, stupid, or unpleasant situations?

Remove the idea that we're oppressing an entire group of people and instead focus on the fact that it's just describing a rather small incident? Why is it okay to call someone 'stupid' and laugh about it but not 'retarded?' Why can we say 'this is dumb' and have people agree, but not 'this is gay?' And granted, using the N word is a really really bad idea because racism unfortunately still exists and it wasn't that long ago that black men and women were segregated from society, but I could see a future where people could use it to describe an ignorant "human" and not an ignorant "black man." Call me what you will, but it will be a great day when we can use any word to describe any person, and they don't care. That a white human, a black human, a gay human can all call themselves by offensive terms and shrug it off.

Let's try and work towards that day, shall we? We don't want to use those words to oppress everybody, we just want to use them in a meaningless conversation, and move on. It's okay. We're not here to oppress, and if you think we are, then you believe that word applies to you. Don't think that. Try thinking higher of yourself. There's a good chance I do too.

I say "fudgsicles." Technically not a swear word, but to me sounds dirtier than ************ or cocksucker. And I can say it in front of anyone without fear of consequences. Hopefully my prolonged use will one day make it into a real dirty word. Maybe you should start saying "That's gaytarded." That won't offend anybody.

I've been saying "That's gay", "You're a complete gayboy" and "Stop acting like such a gay" since I was 16.

I ain't stopping now!

Words don't matter, meaning and context do.
If you're not a homophobe then you're not a homophobe, so it doesn't matter.
+1. I'd say "That's fucking gay" but that doesn't mean I'd discriminate against someone based on their homosexuality.

Do gay people use 'that's gay' in this context too?
I know some that do. In general, the people I know who use these silly terms generally do so in a dismissive manner. It is valuable to have terms that don't just mean "I'M PISSED OFF!" but also, well, that was annoying. I dismiss you, annoying thing! Take that!"

I say "well fooey" a lot too. Or, when I'm typing, I'll do this: thpppbt :p

In the extremely rare circumstances that I use the phrase, it's applied only to objects or situations that in some way evoke an aspect of the homosexual stereotype. Descriptive, not pejorative.

This would actually be really amusing to me. I'd like to encourage any black folks out there to start adopting this terminology immediately, if only because it'd be really funny to see the look on the lily-white Starbucks operator's face when they mess up your order and you proceed to call them "you dumb n-word".

(Normally I'd just go ahead and use the word, assuming that the context would be clear to everyone, but since I've been getting warnings for posts I made WEEKS ago, BEFORE the rules change, I don't know what the heck is going through the mods heads these days. Oh well.)

When stuff like this happens, I (and many others) are only too quick to use the slang "that's gay". I don't like it. I wish that I didn't.

Nobody means gay 'gay', we mean irritating 'gay' - but it still gets to me that I should use this expression on instinct.

So, escapist, what sort of substitutes do you have, and more importantly, how would you go about integrating them into your reflex vocabulary?

Paradigm shift. Gay used to mean happy, and fags used to be cigarettes. Suppose it would be a sign of culture change, but I'm keen to vote it a sign of people's increasing lack of creativity. As for changing it, just have to sort of pound it into your head. Stopping a habit takes a lot of mental work, just ask a smoker ;)

I think I'll keep using it, thank you very much.

P.C. bullshit is the reason the word "******" has mutated from just a common word to refer to a black person into a hateful slur against an oppressed minority, which has now made it impossibly derogatory if spoken by anyone but a black person.

This bullshit of allowing words to only be spoken by their minority groups isn't going to be taken up by me. I don't relish the thought that twenty years from now people will be obligated to say "homosexual" over "gay" because their group called it derogatory.

That would be extremely gay.

Or if I don't feel like cursing I'll say "That's just evil"

I've called the vending machine in my University's main foyer evil many times, I swear that thing has a personal grudge against me, it just never works as in the item I want always gets stuck.

Yet I've seen it work plenty of times for other people when walking past.
I think I've seen this evil machine, thank god I didn't take my chances with it.

OT: Wasps just fucking wasps, this picture should sum it up.

it's a conditioned response. A silly one 'cause "Gay" means "happy." The western homosexual community of the time appropriated it to define themselves, and I'm glad they did 'cause it is working fine for them as you can well see.

Said conditioned response comes from using language first to disparage a group of people and broadening it to generally mean "bad."

Let's all be fucking grown ups and not use it in that context 'cause it just looks stupid.

lemme see:
Balls, crabs, Jebus.
WAAAAAAGH! (if in angry/bad mood)
[insert random Norwegian/English/norwenglish swear word]

I mostly use 'gay' as a reference to someone that's dumb [read: douche, moron, a-hole, etc]. I don't mean it as a... derogatory (did i say that right?) term towards homosexuals, it's simply the way we/I talk over here (although not out loud, mostly mumbling and such).

Still, I think if they want to, people'll change what they say, if they just bother to try.

While I do agree that intent is the most important factor, it's not cool. No need to act like 13 year old xbox live jerks. I'm not sensitive to this sort of thing, jokes about sexuality are ok by me depending on the context(lighthearted, not mean-spirited). But serious negative association is not healthy.

My (very cool) English teacher back in grade twelve proposed the substitute: "that's so DISNEY!"

(Disclaimer: I'm very much a fan of animation especially classic Disney. Tangled did a lot to reassure me of Disney's relevance (not including Pixar, who are amazing), but at the time in the early 2000s, they had nothing going.)

Language evolves over time, some find it offensive that some words have become homonyms.

Lame means something unpleasant or undesired, it also means someone physically disabled.

Gay used to mean very happy, now it means homosexual or lame (as in unpleasant, not the non PC one).

****** used to mean a collection of sticks, or basically a collection of anything held together. Less than a decade ago it was a derogatory term for homosexual, now it's just an all around insult for a rude and obnoxious person (Or Harley riders).

***** is a crack in armour, also a derogatory term for Asian people.

Retarded means something delayed or slowed, behind the norm. It also can mean stupid in both insulting and vulgar manner or just something you disagree with for personal reasons or because it has no basis in reality or common sense.

Context holds a strong power over every word. Language evolves to change the meaning and often the context of how words are presented. Maybe if people would stop getting so upset about the word itself and get more upset about the context there'd be less debate.

I use a lot of different words, but I still use gay amongst them. I have gay friends, they don't give a fuck if I say "that's gay", or call them a gay bastard. The people that do give a fuck about it are annoying, homosexual or not.
