The 15 Films that Influenced Hideo Kojima

The man behind Metal Gear helps promotes some of his favorite films in Japan.

If you played last years Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, you've seen that not only does Konami's Hideo Kojima draw most of his influence from famous films, but he loves making them as well. Lots of them, in fact. While some of the films that have shaped Kojima's stories are more obvious than others (Predator, for example), the one common bind is that they're all easily available to a worldwide audience. Japanese media store Kojima's 15 favorite movies [http://www.tsutaya.co.jp/], along with a bit of insight and trivia from the man himself. If you're looking to have yourself a Kojima film festival (and I don't mean simply playing one of his games), here are the titles you've got to own.

The Guns of Navarone [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054953/] - The classic World War II thriller that inspired the "espionage action" the Metal Gear series is known for.

The Great Escape [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057115/] - Greatest Steve McQueen movie ever? Another World War II film that tells the real-life story of the attempts of Allied prisoners escaping a German POW camp.

Goldfinger [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058150/] - One of Sean Connery's many Bond films as well as the film that Kojima most credits the creation of Metal Gear to.

2001: A Space Odyssey [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/] - Considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, Metal Gear Solid's Otacon was named after 2001's famous artificial intelligence, Hal.

the musical [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063442/], unfortunately, though Kojima does appreciate how it told its tale of society in a piece of entertainment.

The Deer Hunter [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077416/] - Witness the birth of ... Solid Snake's bandanna.

Dawn of the Dead [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077402/] - I don't recall many zombies making their way into the Metal Gear Solid series (Liquid's arm aside), but it sounds like Kojima really enjoys its ... air ducts and closed spaces. Okay!

Full Metal Jacket [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093058/] - Another Kubrick classic, the films female sniper inspired Kojima to try one of his own and thus, Sniper Wolf.

Die Hard [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095016/] - I'm going to guess that it was just the sheer bad ass nature of Die Hard that does it for Kojima.

Heat [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/] - One of the greatest movies of all time that features without question, one of the greatest firefights in cinematic history.

Predator [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093773/] - Octocamo. Ain' nothing wrong with that.

Black Hawk Down [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/] - One of Kojima's biggest inspirations when it came to placing the Metal Gear Solid series in the middle east for its fourth installment.

Children of Men [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206634/] - A critical favorite, Kojima seems to have enjoyed the cinematography here more than anything else.

The Bourne Identity [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258463/] - Hard-hitting action, a return to great car chases and Matt Damon. Hey, what's not to love here?

Casino Royale [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381061/] - Finally, the biggest influence upon Metal Gear, James Bond.

I guess certain unspoken ones, like "Escape from N.Y." and "Escape from L.A." were more nods then inspiration (The whole Pliskin thing in MGS2). Meh. Either way, interesting list. Pretty modern in some cases, as well. I was expecting almost all 80's and maybe 1 or 2 90's movies, and not any movies from within the last 9 years.

Hideo Kojima is the biggest reverse weeaboo I've ever seen.

Also, 2001: A Space Odyssey is overrated.

funny a movie that came out just before the end of the series is something that influenced him a lot? doesn't really make sense unless he means the 60s version

I doubt he means the actual Casino Royale movie, its probably all about the Bond character, he might just think that the Daniel Craig version of him was the best one, and that Casino Royale is the best one made in the series.

Either that or he is basing it on the book.

He did actually mean Metal Gear Solid 4 - the character of Solid Snake was originally inspired equally by Lethal Weapon and Escape from New York, so their abscence would indicate he meant only IV.
Ah, that makes sense. (probably should learn not to use forums when i almost cant keep my eyes open from fatigue :p)

2001 is one of those movies that you have to be in the right mood to watch it. He probably wasn't, or he's thick. 2001 is if anything underrated. It's a beautiful blend of sights, sound, pacing, and story. It's a classic.

I'm sorry if I sound like a dick, but I've never found anyone who has disliked 2001 be able to say why they don't like it, other than "it's boring" which is a fair complaint for most movies, but when someone says that about 2001 all I here, is "I couldn't focus through it" It's a film that requires the viewer to have a brain. It's decidedly not lowest common denominator.

But to each his own, right?

I adore Children of Men.

Movie was great - I wish it got more attention.
I agree. That movie might be one of my favorites of all time. In my opinion it's also, strangely, one of the few movies that's better than the book its based on.

While the reasoning behind the inspiration of some movies is questionable, it definitly holds up good as a list of "movies you really should see some day, if you haven't already"....ESPECIALLY Children of Men, without a doubt the best Movie of 2006 (wow, it is that old already?)

And while i think 2001 is indeed very overrated, i think it should be seen at least once, just because of it's influence and to see for yourself what the fuzz is all about

I'll agree here. 2001 has some fantastic ideas, but it gets caught up in it's own cleverness at times. There are some awe-inspiring moments, but there's an awful lot of filler as well.

Hi, I'm Troy McLure, you may remember me from such other influences as Left 4 Dead's "28 seconds later" and Sonic's "Milk it 'til it Bleeds". ;)

Not too mention Naked Snake/Big Boss' eye patch, and the mullet that Naked and Solid have.
