So, Nintendo confirmed the leak: the 3DS is getting a strange 'cradle' expansion for the purposes of adding a right Slide Pad.

Here's the IGN Article where the details are laid out: http://au.ds.ign.com/articles/119/1194009p1.html

"The device will arrive the same day as Monster Hunter 3G, and will cost 1,500 yen. That's approximately $15-20 (or 12 pounds in the UK). The device will require a AAA battery to function, and will come with one provided."

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I love my 3DS, however this changes things quite a bit from my point of view. The portability of the console - at least for titles that use it - is basically gone. The added battery requirements brings back horror-stricken memories of my Gameboy, thought to be fair it is only one AAA battery, and we don't know how long its going to last.
I like the idea of having twin stick controls - it opens up a world of gaming possibilities more fluid than the touch screen allows - and the price point is actually pretty good, though it'll probably for $40.00 here in Australia. It just seems weird to be buying an addon for a console that's not even a year old.

Anyone else in the same boat as I am?

Since I usually play games only at home (defeating the very purpose of a hand-held or so I'm told), the added battery requirement doesn't affect me. And although two sticks are always better than one, it just re-affirms my fear that we'll be seeing a "new" 3DS in a year's time, with the stick incorporated into the body of the system itself - a 3DS "lite" if you will. I can imagine the fan backlash when that happens, and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Well, the real question is this: What does Jonathon Holmes think about it?
