I fell bad for the newer generation of gamers. I've been around since video games started, and have had the pleasure/pain/experience of playing, if not at least seeing, basically every game ever. Now, with all this high-falootin', hi-rez, 1080p, dual layer blu-ray gaming, most don't want to play the older games, and as such, miss out on some true gaming classics that are timeless, especially arcade games and the whole arcade experience.

Now, sure, you can find re-makes, re-hashes, re-vamps and about a million other conversions of some older classics, but you're not going to be able to truly experience, say, Robotron 2084 with that arcade feel without scoring your own cabinet and turning your garage into a dimly lit, smoky den of bleeping lights and raging midi soundtrack from dozens of different games.

As this is beyond the scope and, perhaps, price range of many younger gamers (and some older gamers, sadly), they'll probably never know the joy of sticking a quarter on that little lip under the screen to call next game. They'll probably never get the joy that comes with putting ASS as your initials for getting the high score, or the bittersweet pain of knowing that when the power goes out, it's all gone, only to lead you to try to reclaim it with renewed fervor.

And yeah, I know there are a few arcades left out there in the world (especially Japan), but the ones that remain are few and far between.

I guess what I'm getting at is this, do any of you older gamers think the kids are missing out?

And do you kids (If your first video game was played on a PS2 or later, you're a kid. Not that that's a bad thing, per se) that have never been to an arcade think it sounds like something you'd dig?

Well, my first game was on a Sega Master System, despite me only being 14. We do *technically* have an arcade in my town, but it's one of these new ones filled with those dumb sit-on racing games and newer titles, not an actual old-school sort of arcade. I'd much rather visit one filled with older games than these newer ones, because when I play them, it just feels like I could be at home experiencing the same game as this but with better everything (given that most of these newer arcade cabinet games all have the graphical style of a PS2). If they're going to do an arcade, they should aim for the nostalgia rather than filling it with "new" titles, because most people these days have a console, and thus that defeats the purpose.

I do. I really wish they would give them a go. What makes me upset is when they talk trash on the older games for their "bad graphics". Well duh. But at the same time I pity them for not experiencing the pure awesomness that is, classic games.

R.I.P 3D Realms.

That's nice to hear. I must say, despite being one of them the current generation of gamers disappoints me. They insult older games for lacking the graphical finesse of newer titles, despite many older games having far more style and enjoyability in the gameplay department.

Ugh, same. Now that was fun.

I remember me and my friend battling through and completing House of the Dead. That was fun also.

Now gaming arcads have been confined to depraved seaside towns and are full of racing games and slot machines for chavs.

I was never super into arcades but since playing the X-Men arcade game is still one of favorite game memories, its sad they will never get a chance for such a memory.
