I reckon Cook is the next captain fo' sho, as they say in the ghetto (so I'm told). I think he's got real talent, he never scores quickly but that's fine in test matches. I can't see anyone else to take over from strauss. He's had to fight for his place before but he's still there and pulls out big scores when he seems to need them.
Talking of players-we-are-fans-of how about stuart broad? The next freddy flintoff as I see it. If he bulks up a bit and channels his anger he'll soon be a great strike bowler.
Oh yes, the baby-faced assassin!! He won't take over from Freddy, purely because he's a skinny little bugger in comparison to Freddy. Seriously, watch Freddy running in, then Broad. Freddy is about twice as wide in the shoulder department.

You can feel the ground tremble as Freddy thumps his foot down. Broad just bounces down -- but he's still a great bowler! He just doesn't have the Pazaz of Freddy.

Listening to it on Test Match Sofa....
Baby-faced indeed. I like to watch a flintoff run-in every night before I go to sleep and the man-beast that is freddy can never be replaced like-for-like! That said, I think perhaps that broad is the next big all rounder. His batting and bowling averages are better than flintoff's were at the same age. Also, feel free to disagree but is he not just a beautiful man?! Not in a flower-power way, but when I see him bowling I can't help but imagine him galloping on a noble steed in shining armour!

Oh, definitely yes. Freddie can never have a direct replacement, but if you are going to replace him, why not do it with the most attractive guy you can find?

Australia will win 5-0.
I hope you're australian! If you're english, give yourself a slap with a cricket bat and drink a cup of tea to "jerusalem"!
I'm definitely an Aussie, so it's ok.
Do you really think another whitewash? I reckon our squad is stronger than yours and we could just about win overall. I don't have too high hopes for the gabba but we've got alot of match winners.
Maybe the rain will save you in Melbourne or Sydney, but I can't see England winning a test.
Ya' know? I think this is going to be a very boring series, as I can't see Australia winning a test either.
Fighting talk, I like it! Though it is 2 against 1 right now it's the ashes and you're australian so who cares! You need ponting and johnson to play well if you want to win a test, either of them not on form and you're in trouble.

Are they back out from lunch yet? I'm busy trying to wake myself up by playing some Hollywood Undead songs very loudly on my headphones.

This is likely our (England) best chance to win the ashes out there in Oz this decade, after the 5-0 of out last visit to the land down under, and our underwhelming and sporadic for of late we need a win, plus the Aus are at there weakest the threatened to resort to Bodyline tactics. You lazy Greeks! Always hiding inside of your phalanxes where no one can get to ya!

OT: I really know nothing about cricket. I tried to learn a bit about it once, but it didn't sound very interesting to me.

That's why I'm listening to something really LOUD!!!!

Listen to Hollywood undead, and you'll realise why I'm using it to stay awake.

Australia will win 3-2. I'm looking forward to seeing some high scores from Watson and Katich. I still haven't found a new favorite player since Gilchirst retired :(

im really excited for this series, i think England will win 2-1. Id really like to see Ian Bell do well seeing as he plays for Warwickshire, oh and Monty to get back in the side for 1 match and take 5 wickets

I hope Bell does well too, his footwork is just crazy-good. I'm somerset, but who cares about counties right now, it's the ashes!

Answering above, 3-2 australia is never gonna happen, I've got high hopes for england this time around. 2-1 england isn't a bad prediction.

Update 3: Pieterson caught at slip for 43. England 117-3. Collingwood and Cook at the crease.
Proabably going to be a low run rate for a while as Colly gets himself in.
