Through this course, students will explore the character of Batman; namely, the canon that defines him, the ideologies that motivate him, his evolution through the decades, and the source of society's ongoing fascination with such a character.

Hah!. Some guy seriously went into a University interview and gave a proposal for a Batman course?. That man has balls of fucking steel. A lot of universities nowadays even buck at a graphic novel class.

On the other hand, I like Batman but let's be real - whoever takes this is getting a pretty shitty education. Nobody needs to know the history of his TV show. Stuff like that is pretty worthless as an academic exercise in a vacuum with no comparative context. Although as an elective, it might be worth some of your money if you wanted to explore the ideologies of the character and series.

On that note, why can't we get a class about Superman? It'd be, like, the ultimate Immigrant Studies course.

Pfft this aint the first. They started doing these type of course in the early 80's. Personally I think its great. I mean, its freaking Batman. The guy is so ingrained into our culture that you can go anywhere in the world, flash the bat-symbol and everyone wil know who it is. Something like that needs to be understood

it's a neat idea but no where near original, there's been other courses like this in the past. tho the batman aspect is definitely interesting, there is a lot of mythos and symbolism surrounding him

And sadly still more useful than an arts degree...

That's open to debate. Yale's literary theory department last year had a course on a select number of manga and its relation to the Japaneses' notion of the sublime in literary and artistic forms. It sounds like an awesome class where you actually learn a bit of stuff. Not an easy A at all. Though I am a physics major studying medicine so my opinions are not expert Art/Literature based.

Still as someone who had electives I can say that courses like this allow students to explore things outside the confined norms of what is expected from a degree. They get to study pop culture with a guided hand and can often lead to the students being more aware of motifs, marketing (Batman and manga both have to be able to connect to their audience), and other important interrelations. I'm sure the lecturer will have a ton of related readings that are "valid" materials that he got the university to bite on.

And Rice really is a great school.
