Everyone knows about them. They're great, they're amazing.. but.. I just can't figure out why.
I listen to them day in and day out, and I never tire of them, they're just pure genious... but why? I can't put on a reason on it.

So I'm going to start a Beatles discussion thread. Why do you guys think they're so great? And if you don't think they're that good, explain why.

I think they so great because all there songs are differnt. All the music was diffrent, I was never the same. Like look at these two songs.

These songs are by the same band from around the same time and they are so diffrent from each other. Thats what made them great.

Creepy? That's a new opinion... care to elaborate?

I don't actually. Think they're great that is - in my estimation the Beatles are a spectacularly over-rated band: they have some great songs[footnote]Great by a certain metric that is, I don't think that I'd personally rate their very best songs as particularly amazing by my personal metrics.[/footnote], a bunch of good/decent ones, and a heaping helping of low-key annoying/uninteresting ones. Even at their best, I'd probably still rather listen to just about anything else - I honestly can't understand the lionization that goes on regarding them.

Of course it's been brought to my attention on numerous occasions that "classic rock" really isn't my thing, so take my critique of The Beatles with that in mind.

They use their actual accents instead of putting on a 'singing voice' for the stage.? :D I've been listening to them more often recently..not sure why but I feel proud to be listening to it. Up the Brits \o/

I agree. Although I do understand why they are so popular, as they have arguably influenced music more than any other band in history. But I personally only ever consider the music when I listen to a band, and compared to a lot of more recent rock they are average at best with a couple of goods songs.

I respect the band for what they did but classic is not the same as good. More modern music has taken the platform that this band built and taken it to a new level.

They're great because Paul, George, and John (ESPECIALLY John, mind you) are three incredibly talented individuals who, through a series of miraculous coincidences, happened to come together as musicians, and as a result brought us some of the greatest music which has ever been written. Seriously, you can't really explain why the Beatles' music is great - it just fucking is. What I find amazing is how the music of the Beatles literally appeals to nearly everyone, regardless of what other music that individual likes. There's this intangible quality to the music which has allowed it endure the test of time and continue to appeal to people from all walks of life.

And, if nothing else, The Beatles wrote "Across the Universe", the musical incarnation of beauty. Seriously, just listen to this - it's AMAZING.

I think Douglas Adams (Of Hitchhiker's Guide fame) placed it in Salmon of Doubt. Being too Lazy to copy a page of text, I will just link to the part.

No. Just no.

They pioneered many of the effects and recording techniques that are used today. Their songwritting, while a bit odd at times, is still very good, even now. They essentially created the idea of a concept album. Their music itself even now, still tops about %90 of what is done today. They were creative geniuses, they were incredible musicians, and without them music would never be the same.

Their music has stood the test of time more than any other band from their era. Anytime a new compailation is out, or even a previously unheard track, it is instantly a number one.

You may not like them, but you owe just about all of our music today to The Beatles, The Stones, Elvis, and others from that time.

I think both of you are wrong and that I think you will get a lot of flame. Just saying. I consider the beatles to be the best band ever, and there never will be a band better then them. You can say that I'am stuck in the past...but I don't care. I will sit back and enjoy the best song in the world.
Have a nice day. :)

Personally I prefer the Rolling Stones. 'Let it Be' or 'Let it Bleed', no competition. Perhaps thats an unfair comparison but with the exception of 1968 year on year I've preferred every Stones release over every Beatles release.

Oh yeah and Pet Sounds (Beach Boys) is better than anything released by The Beatles in my opinion.

Due to the documented competition between The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys I think these are valid comparisons (sorry if pointing that out feels condescending).

I only like a handful of songs by the Beatles and even then, I would probably easily tire of them. As to why they're popular, well they were and still are rather different from every other band on the planet. They're music just really sets them apart.
