Just wondering about what you escapists think is the best cartoon ever made in your opinion. Keep in mind that the one you think is the best isn't always the one you like the most. I'm talking about best in terms of things like animation quality, writing, consistency... all that awards show stuff. But it can be any cartoon, not just ones for kids or adults or whatever. Yes, it can be anime too. But it can't be Ponies. Yea, I said it. Mwahahahahaaaa!

I watch a lot of cartoons, and I've seen a lot of cartoons that are just fantastically well done across many TV channels. But in my opinion Avatar: The Last Airbender exceeds all expectations in terms of quality. The research into it's background is amazingly in-depth, the fight scenes are beautifully choreographed, the animation quality is excellent, and the writing excels at both drama and comedy. It's not perfect (what is?), but it's probably the most well put-together cartoon ever made.

Western animation? Probably either Batman: The Animated Series or Gargoyles. Or Samurai Jack. Or Tom & Jerry. Or seasons 2-7 of The Simpsons.

Gaah, don't make me choose. There are so many I love. And that's not even getting into the great anime I love like Wolf's Rain. There's no way I could pick just one.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I don't play by the rules.

In reality I think the best is Futurama. Sixth season is a little iffy, but the rest is golden.

Courage The Cowardly Dog. Painfully short lived, with adorable characters, unique, cute animation and truly fun/funny/touching episodes. If anyone else remembers the series, they'll know what I mean when I say that I'm not ashamed of "The Last Starmaker" still making me cry, even as an adult. Hell, it made me cry as a kid.. I never cried as a kid.

This one, right here.

It only ran a single episode, was the high point of its season, and yet still carries so much and varying amounts of win that there are little else words I can use to describe it without sounding like a dribbling, incoherent, fanboy. Oops, too late.

Hmmm. Courage was a bit of an anomaly for me. Most of the time it would be really good, whether it was funny or dramatic, but there were more than a couple of episodes that just fell flat. Still, it was pretty unique, which is more than can be said for many cartoons.

Excluding anime, I would saaay.... maybe Samurai Jack? The animation and cinematography were brilliant, and it focused so much on the animation itself, expressing as much as it could through that. And through that it manages to establish brilliant rich characters and world and every second of it was a pleasure to watch. That said, a lot of Genndy Tartakovsky's work is brilliant. I'm sure given time I could think of plenty of other examples or great cartoons.
